What do you use the footwell space for?

So I've finally been able to spend a little quality time with my new A2, and started by giving the interior a good hoovering. Sadly a previous owner seems to have been the habit of carrying loose coal inside the once-lovely light tan interior, and it's going to take more than a vac to get the dirt out...

ANYWAY.... I just discovered the massive secret storage box that sits under the drivers footwell! That's awesome. I see that there is one on the passenger side too, but that's full of frightening looking electronics.

Assuming that the drivers side is supposed to be empty, and I'm not actually missing some crucial components, I was wondering what other owners use that space for?

My first thought was that it should be pretty easy to fabricate a locking mechanism and make a secure(ish) storage box. Or perhaps use it for all the flat-tyre repair stuff in the boot (I don't have a spare) so that you then don't have to empty the boot to get to that stuff?

the exhaust isn't. I put a damp tent in there one time and drove a few hundred kms, to be shocked at just how hot it was when I brought it out.
 
I’ve just taken the soggy footwell carpet up to find the loose cover below and as an earlier poster says a huge empty space. At least I know its supposed to be empty . Will have to check out the other side if it’s full of electronics and potentially water!
emergency spares could be kept here ? Maybe even actually convert into a proper secure storage box . However I’ve a list of ‘must does’ before I start modding. At least i didnt find anything untoward as the cover was clearly left loose!!
 
Converting it to a proper storage box would be pretty cool I'd think, potentially chop up the carpet a bit for easier opening/closing, though would be tough with pasties unless you change to slippers before getting into the car, or like grit.
 
That location houses the tool kt in a Bose equipped car.

I personally do not even like the tools to be in this location. To access them the door is fully open, mats / carpet out then the aluminium plate. All with you and your door in the way of traffic. A great idea on LHD cars driving on the right as it is over the pavement though.
 
I keep jump leads, some tyre weld and an inflatable roof rack in mine. Also my Ketamine…

For a 4 channel amplifier :)
It had to be a digital one, class AB was running hot in there.
