1.4 petrol owner here. And very happy indeed. I would love to have the skills or money to pay someone to help tweak the engine. Lower it and sort out some of the body work marks. But ive used it as a removals truck. Delivery van. Dog transporter. Tip runner. People carrier and occasional go kart.

@thestable Sounds like you use it as a car, now there's a novelty.

AUA & FSI Owner Here

Both been excellent, but the FSI has now over 140,000 miles on it.

Whilst an excellent car the FSI engine has rather a few too many plastic parts break on me in the engine recently which is a shame as when an FSI is working its a superb and quick car.

Therefore of the two the brilliant AUA will be staying, and yes its Jaipur Red.

I have an asthmatic 1.4 petrol for occasional short runs, as it’s not up to motorways or anything serious. I love the quiet motor, classic iconic design and faultless reliability, but just wish they‘d produced a 300BHP Quatro version!

They aren’t that bad on the motorway, but this is the experience I have of the 2 I’ve had, where they are poor in my view is pulling from standing.

I agree that the acceleration performance from a standing is particularly poor. However, I also have very little confidence when joining, or pulling out into the middle lane of a motorway. Luckily I have other cars much more suited to the fastlane.

Just keep it above 4K I personally don’t think they are slow but you have to give them beans.

Which would have rather defeated the point of the A2 concept!
Ours was bought as a local runabout, my tame garage advised going for the small petrol engine which warms up quickly and the days of driving a diesel in towns are numbered so we took the long view.

When we’re not bound by COVID rules and regulations, my 1.4 AUA regularly pounds the motorways of the UK and happily keeps up with traffic. No problem overtaking, and on long runs regularly gives over 50 mpg.
It also spends most of its life in “van mode” with the back seat down or out as I do tend to lug bits of A2 round the country on my travels.

I had a TDi 75 but now own a 1.4 Sport. My motivation for acquiring it was the colour (Pearlescent Merlot) and the Twist leather interior. Thanks Ami! Like some people have observed, I found it a bit 'weak' coming from the diesel.

I put this down to the following (all of which I have dealt with):

1. I had forgotten how to drive a petrol car. I had become very lazy on biting point. The diesel is almost impossible to stall! I also changed up too early and kept having it in the worst part of the torque curve.

2. I started putting VPower 99 in it and it progressively got faster. I don't know whether this was due to 96000 miles running on supermarket fuel 'gumming' it up and the VPower cleaned it or it just likes the high octane fuel. I haven't stopped using the VPower so will probably never know!

3. I swapped the 17" RS4 alloys for some nice 15" Ronal A1 alloys, kindly supplied at a good price from A2Steve. These wheels are much lighter. I put a new set of low rolling resistance Bridgestone Turanzas all round. Both these mods gave another boost in performance.

As Bargepower says above, I do not have any trouble on the motorway or more to the point, the A1 (more hills) which is where I spend most of my open road time travelling between Sussex and Yorkshire. The last trip delivered 48mpg and on the odd occasions I could do 70, I did.

I have the the excellent Timmus colour DIS fitted and with no open road stuff since last September it shows that I have done 1190 miles at average 20mph and 35mpg. That's not diesel territory but reasonable in my opinion. I'm not sure if it is a lot worse during a cold winter, as I never seemed to warm the diesel up on trips between November and February! Never had DIS on the diesel though.

I'm sure others will disagree but although I loved my diesel, I find the petrol better to drive. If I give some revs it on the back B roads, it gives me tons of smiles! If you use 2nd, 3rd and 4th well you can really surprise other drivers, although they sometimes get a bit shirty when they see the '1.4' on the back...

When I were a lad(ish), I transformed my 1.6L Mk2 Cortina into a super powerful monster, only took a junior hacksaw and double sided tape to make it a 6.1L!
Would work on a 1.4 ...

I wanted a diesel but ended up with a petrol and I'm glad I did, the obvious demise of the diesel engine is a factor but to me the petrol gives adequate economy and is quiet and smooth to drive. I would love a bit more poke from the engine but to be honest the car as it is makes me a more sensible driver and therefore saves me fuel and other wear so I'm a very happy petrol owner.
I've been on the motorway a few times and it is adequate for over taking and holding a steady 70mph, for me it is the perfect all rounder.

Back in '01 I had a Saab Turbo and it was a fast car. I never did my trip north in less than 5.5 hours and on the best MPG trip (the slowest) I got 25MPG. Since 2018 I have had an A2 petrol with DIS which recorded my fastest trip at just under 5 hours at 56mph and 48MPG.

On back A and B roads around here, there are only short stretches where the speed limit is 60 whereas 20 years ago this wasn't true and there were far fewer stealth cameras. So in this day and age the A2 is fast enough to have a laugh on the few stretches where you can. I would also say that not being as wide as modern cars you can leave them for dead on bends where they can't be sure they can get their car round fully on the left. This has been enhanced by getting rid of the RS 17s, so that I can be reasonably sure that the bumps won't ruin my line and cause my heart to stop.

I think that driving in this country has become worse and worse in my 40 years with a licence. Traffic density, lane discipline, nobody doing the speed limit, blanket surveillance, have together made the A2 a more appropriate car for 2021 than when it was launched!
