The new Golf sports a 2.0 SDI (without turbo) as entry-level oilburner.
When you compare the data:
2.0 SDI:
- 75 PS at 4200 rpm
- 103 lbs.ft (140 Nm) at 2200 rpm
- 146 g/km emissions

1.4 TDI:
- 75 PS @ 4000 rpm
- 144 lbs.ft (195 Nm) at 2200 rpm
- 124 g/km emissions

It's hard to understand why VW opts for the former?

At a guess the SDI is probably the same engine as the 2.0 TDi with the turbo removed. Therefore the engine and gearbox mountings don't have to be changed to accommodate either of the diesel engines resulting in reduced production costs.

The 2.0 SDI has better bottom end power. I'm talking 800rpm to 1600rpm.

I sometimes drive a 1.9 SDI Polo, and it's great. Sometimes get 70 mpg and it pulls top gear from 800rpm (about 24mph). When the car gets old, no expensive turbo to replace.

In my opinion, the 2.0 SDI is the best engine in the world.

I disagree with smartboost

I sometimes drive a 1.9SDI Polo and a 1.7SDi Lupo too, and they are both horrible after my A2 TDi. They sometimes get 70 miles an hour and have little pulling power beyond 2000rpm in top gear despite earsplitting booming noises.
