When to check oil levels

When I check the oil level when the engine has been off overnight, its at dangerously low levels. When I check it after a 10 minute warm down the levels seem ok. I am wondering if this may have been contributing to my judder when accelerating hard.

When is best to get accurate reading checking oil levels?
 
Are you parked on a slope at either time of checking?

The car needs to be on a flat and level surface to get a true oil reading that is reliable.

If the levels are dangerously low, the autocheck system will warn you in the dash.
