Where Have All The A2's Gone

I collected my car from the stealers and couldn't help noticing they didn't have a single A2 on the site, even the courtsey cars were no longer A2's as they had been for the past 5 years or so, do Audi have a policy of disowning this delightful car now it is no longer being produced, if so shame on them, it was a true first, space combined with ecomony and low running costs. If this is so how long before they stopm producing spares etc for them? I know they have to for a ten year period after the models production ceases so we now have nine years left!

It's true - there are normally very few or no A2s on dealer forecourts these days.
The reason for this is two-fold. Firstly, yes, the dealers are a little reticent to have defunct models on their shiny display areas (notice the rarity of old style A3s, except 'hot' variants, the same will probably be seen next year with TTs).
Secondly, A2s are really sought after now and dealers normally shift any they get in within a week (I was told this by the SKF sales manager). Hence the lack of A2s on the forecourts.
Courtesy cars are now mainly A3 2.0 TDis, as these are effectively the replacement for the A2 in dealers eyes (ie low down the model range, cheap to run as a courtesy car and easy to shift on afterwards).
It's sad but true - in nine years or so, spares will be increasingly difficult to source and the A2 will start to become even rarer.
I agree Mike, the cars we all drive and love are a future classic and were too clever for most Audi drivers. We may well be looked down upon from other Audi owners (and dealers), but we know who has the superior car. True, it might not be as quick as a TT or A3, but it will outbrake them. It's also far cheaper to run, insure, easier to park, will never rust and can take massive loads in its Tardis-like interior.
Cheers,
Mike

Yes, I've noticed this, too - I'm looking around to buy my first A2, and the dealers just don't seem to want to know.

As far as the Mancester is concerned, a salesman at Lancaster Audi said that their high costs of reconditioning A2s (up to Lancaster's rigorous quality standards) to offer them for sale as Approved Used meant that they would 'start looking like an expensive car' [which is why they failed to take on originally, I suppose]. So their policy is specifically not to offer them for sale, just to take them away for auction when any are brought in as part-exhange.

The Smith Knight Fay group (from Bolton to Macclesfield) was similary uninterested.

Only Lancaster Audi in Liverpool said that they actively seek to maintain a certain stock of used A2s (and this is where I'll probably end up going for mine).

Perhaps I should try the independent dealers - there are quite a few A2s with them according to my Autotrader website search. But would these be ex-auction cars, driven hard and mainly high mileage?

Strange how hard it is to find a decent clever little car like this?

David

A search on the Audi site just found 8 A2s throughout the country.
http://www.audi.co.uk/audi/uk/en2/used_cars.html
Coventry x 2
Birmingham x 1
Stratford upon Avon x 3
Worcester x 2
Petrol x 4 Diesal x 4
One with just c8K miles, all the rest 18K to 48K miles

Postscript: On the Audi site, on the used car page, there's a picture of an A2 - so Audi must still like them!

My local dealer has an A2 SE TDI as a courtesy car looks very nice. May wait until they put it up for sale.

resale values

Usually when demand outstrips supply, this proves to be good for resale/residual values. I was (still might be!) concerned that I'd paid too much for mine, but seeing what prices people ask still surprises me.
It definitely looks like diesel sports are the most valuable.
There were a few on ebay recently and I was amazed at some of the asking prices!
Still, not complaining now. I'm pleased with mine and should be even more so soon as the body kit is going on and I'm having the windows tinted next week! 17" alloys next plus Dension iPod thing.

The A2 is certainly proving far more popular now it is no longer made than it ever did before - there have been many articles such as the one in Autocar which had one of the cars on this forum featured - Top Gear did a used car test and Paul Horrell wrote a fantastic editorial on the A2 a few months back

Can you please fill me in on exactly which editions of Autocar and Top Gear these articles appeared - I'd love to get hold of the back issues and read them!

Many thanks!

Small car outwardly, large inside, looks classy next to a golf, excellent fuel consumption, well made etc.

Definitely a great second hand buy and should always have strong golf like residuals, espeically the diesels, but more interesting than a passe "I can't think on my own" Golf. ;)

Not sure where you got that from Alan - if I go on to http://www.audi.co.uk/audi/uk/en2/used_cars.html and select the A2 option then a total of 93 cars comes up!!!

Ops! It's 8 per page and I must of missed the fact there were 20 pages. Put it down to the heat ;-) My study reached 30C yesterday and 32C today and the computer overheating alarms went off. I even thought of going for a run in the A2 just to cool down.
