Hiya,

We've recently been looking for a car to replace our Fiesta and have decided the A2 meets all our requirements and more. The question now is which model??

It will be a used model, so the spec will probably be SE (as climate is a must). Initially we were looking at the Tdi after reading good reports and enjoying the thought of a torquey engine. But for every good report there seems to be a bad one!

The problem is that all three engines are very economical, all quiet and refined. We were planning to test drive a 1.4Tdi (75) and 1.6 Fsi (these seem well priced used).

Any opinions - has anyone had the same problem/ gone through the same process.

All help greatfully recieved![24]

Have had little problem with ours. We have 1.4 Tdi .Are well hapy with it just over 2 yrs old. Very quick. You will find the ride rather firmer than the Fiesta. But the reward in power is there. I do my visits in mine and it is a great car.

I understand your concerns about bad reports. Many times people only post to find out how to fix troubles, or have a moan? When everything is fine you don't hear anything. You will probably find the same on any car?

You need to check that it is fitted with a/c since it was an extra on the SE when we got ours.

Hello a2rookie, welcome to the forum!

I can't speak for the 1.6FSI as I've never driven one but I can thorougly recommend the 1.4 TDi. I've had mine for nearly 3 years now and it's still absolutely great if not better now that the engine is nicely run in at 33k miles, with absolutely no major problems. I've had tiny faults like light switches and other bits and pieces replaced under warranty but you get that with most cars.

Hi Rookie

I've driven 2 different A2 1.6FSi's.

And I own a 1.4TDi SE

I used to be a staunch petrol head... in my own words, describing cars not running on petrol as "dirty diesels" well I've well & truly eaten my words. The 1.6 I think is kak! quite honestly, It doesn't feel that quick and fuel economy is way better on the Dies, and you only really notice the extra noise when you are standing still at the lights.

diesel, diesel, diesel

Make sure you get Climate version, In my opinion the SE is the one to have, as you get, all the other bits, false floor, aluminium trims, vanity lights... blah, blah, blah....

hth?

There have been lots of similar threads on this in the past and it really is down to personal taste and the car you actually test drive. Try and test as many cars as you can.

The 1.6s seem to vary greatly, and our one runs much better on Optimax, and after its recent service. Personally I found the extra weight of the TDI at the front changed the handling, the gearing too high and a too much diesel noise comes into the cabin (I was used to an A6 diesel). However perfomance wise it knocks the petrol into a proverbial ****ed hat for both mid-range acceleration and mpg.

Options I'd go for (in order):
- climate
- sports steering wheel
- winter pack
- DIS
- leather (expensive new, but looks great and easier to clean)

The Sport 17" 9 spoke wheels are look great, but you'll be kerbing them every week.

Good luck

Depending on what you want out of the engines...

Had my time again... (and it wasnt a company car and I could chip it) it would be the new TDI - same 0-60 time as the FSI - without chipping it.

The FSI HAS to revved and worked to get the best out of it (powerwise), if you dont like revving it hard and prefer a more sedate motoring experience (with almost no difference in speed etc)get the TDI.

I had a base TDI for a week and then drove the FSI sport - I like cars to carry corner speed rather than have outright straight line power and at that point the TDI was slower. Cant comment on the weight difference on the same suspension package though.

The FSI engine MPG is pants if you drive it hard, claims of 500 miles to a tank etc are rubbish - I am lucky to get 300, in fact my average over 20k is 268 per tank! and I wait until I have only a couple of litres left. 33mpg is my average. And you HAVE to run it on the more expensive 98 octane fuel.

Horses for Courses....

Cheers

Drive all 3 back to back-if your Audi dealer says no, tell them where to go. They should let you, as you are parting with many £'s.

I've driven all three, and own a 1.6FSI.

I had the slower of the TDi's last and it felt really nice to drive my FSI after that, way more refined and quiet. the faster TDi is a different story though, still the extra noise, but the low down torque makes it wonderful to drive around town.

I prefer the quiet and smooth engine of the petrol which is the only reason i dont have the TDi... even thought the FSI doesnt feel as fast.
