Windscreen replacement

I have had two screens replaced within the past 6 weeks, neither are OEM and both are a good fit.

I have to say, after a false start and a 24 hour delay (due them not ordering the screen in time) Autoglass did a very good job of fitting a none OEM screen (only identifier on the screen was Pilkintons made in Germany).
The guy doing the job had never done an A2 before but was meticulous in his work and the fit is pretty damn good. Pretty nervous when refitting the wipers, that spring is so strong!

We concluded that the screen we were replacing was the original because of the way it was bonded with 2 lines of bonding and no black primer, however there was a gap in the bonding at the bottom of the screen. Could this have been poor QA or could it be deliberate? Never heard any wind noise so who knows.

Based on this and the recent experience of others I am hoping that ongoing replacement with non OEM screen is no longer a concern for any of us.

Pilkington are an Audi/VAG oem supplier I believe. I have one on the Beetle. My last A2 screen was guardian iirc, which was also a perfect fit once fitted correctly.

And yes, not many fitters have seen an A2. The guy that fitted mine watched open mouthed as I took the bonnet off..." Is it broken ?" He asked

Is that ‘had’ Dave. 😉

Seriously, sourcing parts for these rare little cars is going to become a major challenge - either parts will be unavailable or we’ll be held to ransom and pay a premium (already the case in part). Ethical breaking of life expired cars will become more and more important. Thanks @A2Steve for the service provided to members.

I found out yesterday that Audi have only ONE original 8Z0 tinted windscreen in stock across the UK dealerships.

and my partner in crime @Clackers

I've currently got 3 breakers/fixer uppers lined up, so we are good for parts for a few months yet :)

Adding my experiences here to benefit others.

National Windscreens came out to fit a Nordglass windscreen.
After the fitter installed it, it was clear to me that the lower third of the screen was sitting proud of the B pillars on either side of the windscreen.

I raised my concerns, that the curvature of the screen was not correct and therefore not fit for purpose.

Next week, the fitter will return with a Pilkington screen and go again!

Bottom line, do not accept a Nordglass screen for your A2.
