Windscreen Wipers Stopped Working!

Again cheers to everyone who contributed on this thread from me.

My son called home from 90 miles away at Uni saying our A2 wipers had stopped working. After a quick surf and coming across this thread I could talk him through the steps to test them, install the earth wire and low & behold the wipers are working perfect again!

Great result and really appreciate other people sharing the knowledge!

The wiper earth issue is not helped due to the aluminium and steel chemically reacting. This forms an oxidised layer that increases resistance and eventually breaks the circuit. Running the extra earth solves the problem but even that will eventually suffer the same oxidisation. Worth carrying jump leads in the car to make an emergency repair if out and the wipers stop.

My extra earth modification. Cable is made by myself

Thanks to the forum again. Wipers fixed easily by attaching an earth to the motor body after they packed up today in the rain. Saved me alot of work, I would have assumed motor had packed up. cheers

I have noticed the wipers on my TDi75 are quite slow, especially on first use, I think I should experiment with the extra earth before they pack up altogether!

Me too, my FSI wipers stopped working and it was easy to diagnose a faulty return. I even used the proper brown colour insulation for ground when installing a new link wire as others ha e done. However, the motor does also have a ground wired to it. From a few extra measurements, I think the problem has to do with internal connection of the hold-on park switch which always parks the wipers. But I didn’t have time to fully suss it out.

That worked so well. I hijacked a short length of hifi speaker cable, I'm sure the silver plated oxygen free copper made all the difference. What a difference it is too. Not only does it no longer stop, but the blade moves far quicker and smoother now. Thanks to everyone who share their solutions on these pages.
