Wiper Knocking On Windscreen

Afternoon All,

After several hours of diving my car with an annoying knocking sound from the front end I have finally discovered my wiper arm is knocking on the front screen!!! This only happens on rougher road surfaces but has been driving me mad

Has anybody else ever come across this before and if so how did you rectify the issue?

One thing i have noticed is the rubber caps that should be on the inderside of the wiper arm are missing but never the less I'm sure the arm should not be running this close to the screen.

Best Regards

Quite a few people have come across this. Beware that if the arm is dropped onto the screen (for example when cleaning the car), the windscreen can be broken by the impact with the elbow of the wiper arm.

I can confirm that i have just achieved this

For such an over-engineered wiper, why the hell did they let that design failure happen?

A new Bosch wiper cured this for me. I suspect a new wiper has more curvature in it, which holds the arm slightly further from the screen.

Having looked more closely at my wiper arm last night there seems to be a lot of play where the 2 rivets connect, I think it may be time for a new arm :(

Also read through the links supplied by MikeMarsUK (thanks Mike) I also noticed the rubber stopper has disapeared from my wiper arm!!!

Thanks for all the replys much appriciated :)

I tried bending my wiper arm this morning and I seem to have made it worse! I tried to bend it to get the top of the arm where the missing rubber grommet is further away from the screen, but all I've achieved is to make the middle of the lower arm now closer to the screen instead. Whoops.
