Yet another new guy

Hey Wayne, welcome to the club - like you I’ve just returned to living in the uk after a long spell abroad (Singapore in my case - see my intro thread “Hello from Singapore” whereby the good people of this parish were helping furnish some basic understanding of what spec of A2 might be most suited for my needs). You might find it useful also.

Like you, I had trouble getting sense out of insurance companies as a result of my situation. Assuming the A2 you have / are looking for will be unmodified then check out the RAC, they were very reasonable and for £600 I got a fully comp policy with homestart breakdown, legal costs, uninsured driver, windscreen and driver other cars 3rd party cover.

Hello mate yea I was definitely shocked when I heard 1528 quids to insure such a car and after some helpful advice from guys in the group have got it down to around the same as you but with non of the extras you have so will be smashing some buttons today to with the RAC to see if I can get a better deal.. ?

You should be able to get your full NCB although I don't think that you'll get it protected. I was 8 years in NZ and didn't have any problem.
I bet Birmingham is a bit of a shock after WA.

Sorry I made a glaring omission! Hadn’t had my morning coffee....

The above price was for our 2.0 TDI Touran, so on an A2 you may well do better than me. To insure my A2 was £900 but that was because it’s on an agreed-value, modified car policy from Adrian Flux - It came with the same bells and whistles though.

@trevorswaine No-claims bonuses expire after a few years, so both Wayne and I have to start again.

I was with woolies over in oz so had full cover etc ...
I'm a born and bred brummie had 38 years here so I knew what i was letting my self in for again but it was 2 family emergencies that has brought me back so some times you have to prioritize your life .. it was 40 plus dgs when I left WA and still rising but I got off the plane in brum with a tshirt , shorts and my thongs on xmas day and everyone was looking at me like in was mad but I already knew that ??

I know I know . We can buy extra wide pairs over there so when you hit the sand it's like you have just aired your tires down so you float over the sand and not sink into it ???

Various insurance companies use similar and sometimes different metrics to arrive at a premium, things to consider and contribute to premium reduction are as follows:

1. Limiting mileage - be realistic but set as low as you can
2. Increase your excess - insurers like you to contribute more in the event of a claim, just balance to premium as upping excess by £500 for a £10 premium reduction is a false economy.
3. Park on a drive or better still in a garage if possible - helps premium reduction.
4. Make sure your occupation is listed correctly.
5. Adding named drivers who also drive the car helps however only do this if they have clean licenses and are actually going to drive it.
6. Consider an advanced driving course - again balance price vs premium reduction.
7. Consider removing add-ons such as breakdown cover, foreign travel - consider what’s actually appropriate for you.

These are the main things however they are pretty generic on comparison sites. Also look at companies not on comparison sites such as Aviva and Direct line too.

Finally once you found something reasonable, go to the insurers website directly as they may be cheaper..... cutting out the comparison sites’ commissions. If they are marginally more expensive then ring them as they may negotiate to secure your business.
Great info but i have found on a few occasions parking on road can be cheaper???

Really, that must be an anomaly, there is significantly less risk of it being driven into when parked when it’s on a drive than parked on the road. I know where I rather my car be parked.

Fully agree but i no longer apply logic to car insurance
