Your A2 related plans for 2020?

My little A2 turns 19 years old In 2020. Requires a near side front wheel refurbishment as well as new front discs with ceramic pads. The car is also due a belt and water pump change, but I’ll struggle to do 1000 miles this year, so will see at service time...

Sadly looks like the 2020 is the year of parting ways with my long term A2 TDI.
I still love the car dearly and depart satisfied that I have completed my original project vision way back in late 2013 early 2014.. with a set of wheels bought in 2009..

I still adore the A2 as a package and platform, Excellent as the TDI undoubtedly is at traversing great distances, Im just not very enthusiastic about diesel engines in any other circumstance (which is my day to day now) and unfortunately none of the other engines offered do anything for me dynamically. + I need bit more of a work horse and .. twist nappa leather should not be used for taking plaster board and wood to the recycling center.

For me Ill probably be going back to using an older car from the last Millenium.. an Alfa 164 QV.. or E55 AMG Wagon.. or a Honda ZE1 Insight.. Or maybe ill end up buying another FSI in red and finally carry out the AVY or AFH engine swap ive been fantasising about in recent years.

Who knows.. but Im sure ill still be reading everyones builds and try to get along to a social along the way.

best 2020 to all at A2OC

You've got to keep the Crystal Blue one! Just replace the suspension with something that doesn't have the material properties of reinforced concrete. :)

I know what you mean, but that’s an expensive gig and I’d need to find someone to do it.
I’m also wondering about other costs like the chain tensioner in the sump that I’ve read so much about as the car is getting a bit rattle and up to 155k miles.

I‘ll do some thinking ...

Not sure how much of these I'll get through, but in order of urgency
Mabel - new tyres, sort out loose/leaky oil filler, new header tank, new mats, clutch

Barney - ABS wiring loom, deep clean the seats, mend rear window demist, replace oil sensor, pollen filter, clutch and exhaust, spruce up/replace suspension, remove DLRs, new number plate, refurb headlights, new mats, oil up OSS, fit the fog lights I bought ages ago, fit the stereo and air con units I bought ages ago, sort out weird right wing mirror, get back right wing bodge sorted.

Move house so I have a garage and drive to keep and look after my A2s

Phew!

I will still be thinking of buying another... Only thinking though. I think my days of buying ICE cars, however well designed and built, is over. Likely we'll be going fully electric if we ever need a replacement car.

.... got to fix the problems found in the last inspection. New discs needed up front, then the fluid, and all sorts of other stuff is just waiting for time, effort and money to be available.

Bret what is the road tax like on an a2 in Finland we know uk we hear menno having to pay 80 euro or more per month in Holland have they put up road tax on older vehicles with you ..

depends if you call €240 / year lots? It's not too bad at the moment, but will probably go up. Insurance is a different story, got to sort that out before it comes back on the road on a longer-term basis.

That’s a lot less than Holland ...but for us at present on a diesel a2 35€ per annum ..I think overall we are very lucky ..but there again you live in a nicer part of the world ..as you know I lived in Scandinavia for 3 years .thanks bretti happy new year ?

Sort out the top mount bonging

Cambelt and water pump for peace of mind

New head unit. It's only a single din, so as long as I can get aux-in and bluetooth for calls I'm happy.

And least of all, a refurb for my wheels, which are sadly quite shabby. Although this isn't a massive concern on a commuter car, if it was only ever going to be that, I wouldn't have bought an aluminium, 3-cylinder monospace, I would've bought any old regular car...

Good thread this @A2Steve lots to enjoy here, and even laughed out loud in a few places (particularly enjoyed the 'make a plan and budget, then ignore it' post) ?

As a relative newbie to the forum (and grateful for already having gained lots of knowledge and helpful support and parts from you all) I think 2020 likely to be a blast at the following:

1.4 SE black, 56k miles:
> Hopefully find someone knowledgeable inside 50 miles of SE London to meet up with for a beer/brew to help me fit my new front fog lights switch, used front fog lamps, and do the wiring for them.

> Ditto the refurbed custom front door check straps Deproman has been crafting in his A2 magicians workshop ?

> Figure out the best solution to replace my dampish front shock, perishing rear bump stops and futureproof my suspension to the optimal comfort ride.

> Fit new Nextbase front and rear cameras (and find someone who won't trash the interior to help me fit the hardwire ?)

1.4 TDI 90bhp, Okoya Silver, 117k miles:

> I've absolutely loved this car, and sorry to have to sell it, especially the extra power of the TDi90 engine and it's reliability, but we will finally be selling in February after a comprehensive set of repairs and servicing in December by the excellent Gary in Sunbury. It will have an MOT in mid Feb and then hopefully onto a good new owner.

Happy 2020 to all members.

I'm thinking of changing the gearbox on my TDi90 (getting a little noisy) and a 6-speed conversion would seem to make sense. Does anybody offer these now? (I lack the time, skills or facilities for DIY jobs beyond simple maintenance).

Other than that, probably thinking of a quick trip to @depronman for a wiper arm fix and, possibly, cruise control install, if you're up for it Paul?

I'm certainly not based within 50 miles of SE London, but I cover all of London when I'm on my retrofitting tours. I've retrofitted front fog lights more times than I can remember and know the A2's electrics and interior down to the last wire / plastic tab.

Fitting a wired rear camera into the A2 isn't easy. Getting additional wiring into the boot hatch in a way that won't compromise the waterproofing at the hinges requires a great deal of care and a huge amount of the interior trim to be removed.

I always have cruise control systems in stock as this is by far my most popular upgrade.

Cheers,

Tom

Thanks Paul,

I've still got your email address from the last time we met, so I'll email you at some point shortly.

Cheers

Suspension overhaul (front and rear shocks) desperately needed and mini service at WOM.
O/S Doors fitted and sprayed.
ready for the impending 200k milestone.

Possibility of mine being in storage for a while as I may join the cruisliners. When I am back and have some time I'd like to give the front suspension and all bushes a refresh. Start prepping my 2nd engine as a back-up. Upgrade my speakers and amplifier. Fit all my new interior bits after sound upgrade.
