You're sure this is a quality car?

Oh dear. Tried the car this morning and there's something fishy going on still.
With the new probe in, the car initially runs ok, without the EPC light. But, all of a sudden it starts to idle erratically (lights come on), between 700-900 rpm and sounds like it's going to stop, then it "adjusts" itself and runs fine again for a minute or so. I can rev the engine and all, and drive it, but it has this behaviour. Something's not right apparently, but it seems at least part of the problem was the probe. I'm wondering if I screwed anything up with the throttle when I cleaned it out, what are the chances of that?

I've heard something about an EGR valve causing a problem as well as an rpm sensor of some sort. Any clues? Come monday I'll try and get it to Audi and have it tested.

I'm puzzled about the relationship between sensors and probes having a fit and breaking down all at once, it doesn't seem logical...

Getting some readings with VAG-Com really is the next step. It's possible that the EGR valve is also "unsure" of itself and therefore giving too much exhaust gas into the mix (leading to uneven idle). But I can't see from here *why* it would do this - if there's a calibration issue, dirt or a faulty sensor / valve somewhere. RPM sensor would normally mean cutting out, randomly.

The error message would help enormously.

Sarge, the TBA seems to be at least one possible problem. Can't make much sense of it though, I am assuming it requires VAG-COM hooked up or something along those lines to actually read and enter data?

Yes it is done with Vag Com software (and hardware), you will need to get this or access to one to run the procedure.

Be careful of buying shareware versions as some won't be able to it or won't even work as past experience has taught me.

Thanks mate, I'll be heading off to Audi, nobody around with the equipment that I know of and I don't think I'll have the need for it further on.

Stupid question perhaps but what are the risks of damaging the engine if I drive it to the garage in this state?

Just going through the logic here. If I were to purchase a vag-com thingy, which one should I get? Is it the KII-USB or Micro-CAN or do I need the more expensive HEX-CAN unit to recalibrate the throttle?

I'm expecting a scan and reprogramming at AUDI is going to cost me not much less than buying the DIY kit, which also gives me the possibility of fixing any other problems I might discover. Unless of course, someone close by has the equipment and is willing to lend or help me out...

I have a cable, but post to Sweden is at least one day. Did you post in teh Swedish thread?

Stockholm has *lots* of A2s ;)

Ross-Tech is enough, as is a laptop with a real serial port.

Did you get the cable from Ross, and if so, which type is it?
I'll try posting in the Swedish section as well, but I'm starting to think it could be worth getting this "system" for myown use...
I've downloaded the software, now all I need is a cable.

Hey, I'll be at Vantaa on monday morning around 4 am, fancy stopping by? :D

Final silly question I hope.

With regards to VAG-COM. In order to perform the TBA, do I need the full VAG-COM software or can it be done with the "trial" version?
I found a couple different adaptors through some local electronics stores, but again, in order to perform the TBA, do I need the original Ross-Tech adaptor?

Thanks for helping out!
