17700 Map Controlle engine Cooling Thermostate (F2659) OPEN CIRCUTR

Hi. I got the error Message on my FSI 1.6L engine.
17700 Map Controlle engine Cooling Thermostate (F2659) OPEN CIRCUTR
41792
02851

I assume it's not the thermostate, but the Sensor. The temp on my engine is going fats to 90 deg C.
Where is the sensor located in the engine, and is it hard to change the senor?

Best regards
Lars

I'd take that error message exactly as it reads. FSI's do have an electronic thermostat that is controlled by the ECU.

Thanks anyway, hopefully I get some one to give me some information, how I can change the termostate. Best regards Lars

Looks like you're in luck:

Hi Lars,

I have been through this thermostat fault in the last year. I had the same code 41729 but not the 02851 code. My experience is here but I must get round to to completing the thread, I hate threads that just end in mid air with no conclusion.

First I have to say why are you focussing on the temperature sensor when the reported fault is the thermostat? The temperature sensor produces its own fault code, I know!

In answer to your question the temperature sensor and thermostat are both attached to thermostat housing situated at the upper right (facing the car from the front) of the engine block, well hidden under the upper inlet manifold and other things in the way.

A new Mahle thermostat housing and attachments.

Replacing either is a bit of a pig of a job which is why I let my mechanic do it!

I see you have the link to Sarge's excellent fresh post, but here are alternatives

I am convinced the Audi's OEM suppliers for the thermostat housing, temperature sensor and thermostat were Mahle, notice the scratched out Audi rings in the pictures!

A word of caution, the thermostat housing is likely to be very brittle take great care. My advice is to buy the housing and fittings as one item, probably not much difference in cost to buying the thermostat and sensor separately. This way if things go wrong you have the housing to hand but this is a much bigger job, said to be worth doing from a preventative maintenance viewpoint for it is known to leak with age.

I bought this, the cheapest I could find at the time...

Hope this helps but it has just struck me you will be LHD which might make replacement even more difficult!

Hi Andrew. Thanks for your very comprehensive answer on the thermostat problematic. I will now go out to check on my car, how difficult it is to get acsess to the termostate when I additionally have a left-hand drive car. The strange thing about the error is that my car is working fine, the temperature is 90 deg in the instrument panel. My only problem is that I got the yellow engine light in the instrument panel. In Norway you need to deliver the car to EU inspection ea. second year. If you have an engine alarm in the instrument panel you need to fix it, or you are not alowed to use the car. Best regards Lars

My FSI when the thermostat was faulty and threw up an EML reached 90 deg on the dash and the car ran fine but seemed to take an age to get there. Same rules on illuminated EML here now, but if it is cleared I expect the light to go away for a few weeks allowing a window to get the car a 'MOT'. The time between clearing the fault and the yellow light returning will diminish to quite a short time in the future.

Good luck.

Andy

Hi Andy. I have now ordered housing and fittings as one item from the link you sent me on ebay. Has been looking on the job that needs to be don to change the termostate. I agree, it is not a stright forward repair job. I will anyway trie. :) Best regards Lars
