You may be lucky as early cars did have headlamp units where the 'glass' could be removed from the shell. If your units have several metal clips round the flange then it can be opened up. There is a rubber type gasket and no sealant so they come apart quite easily.
The later 'sealed' units don't have any clips and are bonded with an extremely strong adhesive so they don't come apart
