ABS Warning light etc

Hi all,

Hope you can see the photo?

From searching posts I have a feeling it is either 1 of -

1. low brake pad sensor.
2. worn abs sensor.

Would I be right?

Hopefully scanning the car trow night but thought I would post a pick of the warning lights showing to see if anyone could help out on here also?

We get the loud beep and lights come on seemingly at random - first it was in the rain on Saturday then turned engine off & restarted - nothing then came back on yesterday.

cheers

ABS sensor lights

I have exactly the same dashboard warning lights that you mentioned. The central red light in the D.I.S and two other yellow lights. The Speedometer also cuts out whilst you are driving. I have lived with this problem for 6 months and now my brake lights have stopped working recently. I checked the bulbs and they seem to be okay so now I realise this problem is compounding itself and needs expert input from Mike.

I have spoken to Mike (Genius engineer from Skipton) about this problem and he informs me it is the ABS sinsor that is faulty. I was going to take my car up to him in January but have been too busy with work commitments. I will endeavour to eventually get the car up to him sometime soon. I would suggest that you PM mike about the problem if your still not clear about the fault.

Have you checked the brake fluid level?? If its low that sets the red warning light off.

Any yes, worn brake pads or a dodgy wiring loom to the brake pad wear sensor can cause the random ABS lights.

John

Just to add, worn brake pads (ie worn through the connection embedded in the passenger side outer pad or a damaged wiring loom to the pad sensor) will give an amber version of the picture you have attached, since it is only a warning that action is required soon, it is accompanied by a single beep. Any red warning sign means "take me to your dealer", since it may be a critical safety system that has broken or has malfunctioned, this is accompained by 2 beeps.

I am quite risk averse and would probably not drive the car far with a red warning showing, well, until I knew exactly what was causing it and that it was safe to continue driving the car, but that is just me

Hi all,

Thanks for the advice - scanned the car tonight and it picks up

'left ABS sensor' so hoping it is a wiring issue (corrosion or broken) as opposed to the sensor - heading to the local garage tomorrow so will report back when I know for definite!

Brake fluid level was the first thing I ckecked and thats all ok.

decision time!

Well I dropped the car at the local independant - we took it for a quick spin and  for the first time this week no warning lights came on!

However they kept the car for the day and have diagnosed the same as I had found last night - fault code 00283.

According to their advice I have 2 options -

1. replace the front left speed sensor for approx £100 incl parts,VAT & labour

or

2. Replace the ABS control unit for £835.28 plus VAT and approx 2.5 hrs labour

I am tempted towards option 1 and to take the gamble that it cures the issue, I haven't yet mustered up the courage to tell the management yet aside of the fact that there is no way we can afford to pay for option 2.

I am self employed so also can't really afford not to use the car to get to meetings etc.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

cheers

That fault code only relates to the Front left speed sensor, not the control unit, so option 2 doesn't exist!!!

If its the speed sensor, they are around £50 i think from audi and they are relatively easy to fit. Pop the wheel off, remove the bolt holding it in to the hub. Remove it from the hub and replace.

If its the wiring, the loom can be replaced, think replacement from audi is £35, but then has to be spliced into existing loom.

Thats great thanks John - if that rules out option 2 that will please the management no end! If I had realised it was that 'easy' I would have had a crack at it myself - particularly as our other car seemingly developed a fuel leak whilst on way for an Easter break late on Friday night - being an S4 I am guessing at a pricey fix but hoping for maybe a damaged pipe or similar!

The weird thing is that whilst away in the A2 over Easter the warning lights did not come on but returned this morning on my way to work.

Will post the outcome in order to help others in future.

Hi Churchy,

The intermitant nature of the problem may point to a break in the wiring loom to the sensor. As previously mentioned this loom branch is for the ABS sensor and brake pad wear sensor wire and is about £35 + the cost of splicing it in, just after it joins the main loom (which is through the wheel arch under the bonnet near the coolant bottle). The wire broke for my brake pad sensor and the orange warning signal came on randomly (or when it was cold!! - due to an inflexible cable??). The new one was fitted in under an hour by my local VAG specialist for less than £100 including the loom. No problems since then 12 months on.

I guess you will have to try one or the other! I have a coin you can borrow! heads is the sensor or tails the loom :D

Good luck,

David

Many thanks all for your help on this - opting for the sensor intially and will update all once complete - on first scan by the local garage the wiring seems intact and ok.

Update!

Hi all,

Well I opted for the fornt left wheel speed sensor and...........:( it didn't fix it!

So based on the fact that I do not have £800 plus sitting around and I really want to believe that it is not the ABS module what should I opt for next?

- replace the wiring loom which unless broken inside looks fine?
- try and buy a recon ABS control unit off web and code it to the car?

I love the A2 but to the wife a car is a car and this one seems to be a bit fragile especially being only 7 years old and having 70k on the clock.......!!!!!

:(

Hi Churchy
The fault code you posted earlier suggested the problem was with the wiring or the sensor. For me the next step would be to have the wiring checked and possibly another diagnostic scan to see if the fault has changed.
If you really need to have the ABS unit checked, this company may be able to help - http://ecutesting.com/
They were recommended by 'Honest John' from the Saturday Telegraph motoring section.

Cheers Spike

Ref John's mail below, A2 ABS modules can't be repaired.

Investigation continues!

In my mission to achieve the cheapest fix I have replaced the wheel speed sensor and now have faults showing as below with a fresh scan -

Wednesday,21,April,2010,19:11:39:13314
VCDS Version: Release 908.0

Address 03: ABS Brakes Labels: Redir Fail!
Control Module Part Number: 8Z0 907 379 C
Component and/or Version: ESP FRONT MK60 0101
Software Coding: 0019471
Work Shop Code: WSC 02154 785 00200
1 Fault Found:

00283 - ABS Wheel Speed Sensor; Front Left (G47)
012 - Electrical Fault in Circuit

SO next I am going to replay the wiring loom but does anyone know the part number (03 plate 1.6FSI) and or know of a guide to replacing such a part?

cheers all

Your helpful local Audi dealer parts department can order up the loom for you.

There's no real guide on how to replace other than this:

Remove wheel, unclip connectors for speed sender and brake wear indicator (as it's the left side you're working on), unclip cable from the guides arounf the damper and then push back through the bulkhead into the engine bay.

Cut off the old cable and then solder in the new one. Make sure to use solder and heatshrink to make the repair long-lasting and then re-assemble.

Cheers,

Mike

Thanks Mike - so after retest would you be confident that it is a faulty loom and not the ABS unit or am I being too hopeful!!!!!?????

It could possibly be the main unit still, but my money would be on the loom - it's known to fail and the DTC is more indicative of a wiring loom failure.

Fingers crossed!!!

Cheers

Mike

Problem solved! Sensor has been replaced which did not fix the problem so bought a new loom from Stoke Audi, v easy to fit at one end but had to go to my local independant in order to connect the wire into the main loom of the car which was beyond my ability! Once I saw where it went once through the wheel arch I bottled a DIY fix!

Hope the info in this thread helps others - joyfully back to driving the car without the dashboard illuminations and 3 lod beeps soundtrack to accompany it!

I've got the same on my A2 tdi 90.

Been driving with it for 2 months or so, looking to inspect the loom this weekend if I get time, hopefully same kind of fix!
