Buying Tips

Hi Guys,

I am hopefully going to be looking at som A2's because I have wanted one secretly for ages but had no real purpose for it, I am joining you all the way from the Alfa 145 forum where I have resided.. I have sold my 145 now to buy a practical 5 door for me and the mrs.. gutted because it was amazing. However with a baby on the way I promised the mrs we could sell the god awful fiesta she has and buy something a bit better.. luckily I showed her an A2 and she liked it.

So I would like to know if there are things I need to look for in an A2.. spec levels etc. Problems that can occur and all that jazz.

We are hoping to spend around 3-4 grand tops preferably 3! Seen a lovely 70k miles 1.4 petrol in silver and SE trim at 2995 locally and going to look at the weekend.

Thanks in advance for any help and advice,

James

Welcome Macca
There is a buying guide here which might be useful

3k will get you an A2 but with not much to choose from, so if you can stretch to 4-5k your range of vehicles to choose from will widen quite a lot.

Worth considering if you want a petrol or diesel too (the diesels cost £30 a year car tax for example). Happy hunting!

I will miss it indeed, I have had 2 and if anyone wanted either a 145 or 146 I wholly recommend the 2 litre ts unit, unbreakable, my 1st did 180k when I sold it and the 2nd 113K.. keep the belts changed at 30k intervals and they run forever...

Anyway I digress... I found the guides excellent and whilst I would like a tdi my budget may not stretch but a 1.4 petrol will be fine for us tbh, still cheap to run and insure, not too bad on fuel- we wont do that many miles so hopefully we will find a good one.

What is the cambelt interval by the way?

The cambelt interval is, eer, shall we say, I'll get back to you on that one...

The advice from Audi keeps changing. Others can give more detail!

I have been doing some googling and the sites I found suggested anywhere from 45k to 80k miles for a cambelt change.. the vast majority said 60 though!

Welcome Macca :)

There had been a 1.4 SE on an X-registration in Jaipur Red with tan leather & around 73k within your budget, I'll try and find an ad :)

As someone who was an unsure newcomer to the A2 fold this year, after 15k miles in a 1.4 petrol I can highly recommend them and so will my passengers from a couple of euro trips :D

Happy hunting:)

Service books have various recommendations depending upon the age of the car but guidance from Audi is now 75K or 5 years for the whole A2 range - however, for quite a while FSI's and TDI's had 60K limits so it's a brave owner that goes past 60K with those models...

Petrol 1.4's originally had a mileage limit at 80K but no age limit

Without proof of a cambelt, tensioner and waterpump change budget for the best part of £300 at a specialist for this lot.

Thanks very much all of you, that info is very helpful indeed, we will be sorting a car within the next 2 months and I really hope we get a decent A2 before junior arrives.

Don't forget to look at our posts regarding prams, buggies, pushchairs and carseat! Quick answer is no, the big bugaboo won't fit in the boot flat without taking the wheels off.

That does look very nice, I am off to look at these 2 and take the other half out for lunch hopefully at the weekend.

I like the look of the 1.6 fsi better but whats the fuel consumption like.

Oh and as far as cars seats go my other half has settled on a silvercross with a nice compact car seat.. nice and small and secures on the seatbelt so should be fine.
