Boot release on remote not working, also passenger electric window switch

Hello chaps,

Over the weekend I started pulling our new A2 apart to see if I could see why the boot button on key fob didn't work or the passenger electric window switch. Boot first, solendoid is working OK, well it works when you open the boot manually. The only other wires seem to be to a micro-switch in the lock itself which I guess is to let the electronics know that the boot is shut. The boot looks and unlocks using the pad lock buttons on the fob. Could it be that the boot fob button has been disabled?

Similarly I took the front passenger door panel off to check that the electric window wiring hadn't become unplugged. It had not. The front passenger side electric window works from the driver's double switch. The passenger side switch does NOT illuminate when the lights are switched on. Could this have been disabled via VCDS?

If it helps I did a scan with VCDS-Lite before I started with the following results (unfortunately the unregistered version I had to look all the details up and could not see anything relating to either the boot or the electric window switch):

Hi Phil,

Apologies if this seems patronising, but I've got to ask...
Are you aware that the boot button on the key fob needs to be held down for a couple of seconds for it to work? Pressing it briefly like the lock and unlock buttons has no effect.

If this also doesn't work, then we'll start doing some diagnostics.

Cheers,

Tom

Hi Tom,

Not patronising at all. I don't have an owners handbook so little tips like this are very very helpful and guess what, it works. :) Thanks for that.

I don't thinking holding the electric windows switch for a couple of seconds will make any difference though so open to suggestions on that one.

Thanks again,

Hi Phil,

I'm glad we've got one problem sorted! :)

Does the passenger front door lock and unlock perfectly?
The fact that your switch doesn't illuminate suggest that either the switch itself is dead or that the door control module (the black box behind the door trim) is partially faulty.

Cheers,

Tom

Tom,

The passenger door does, indeed, lock and unlock correctly. Is there anyway I can test this with VCDS-Lite (unregistered or even registered if need be)?

Just had another look at that list of fault codes and looked them up on the Ross-tech wiki. The following look interesting:

01331 - Door Control Module; Driver Side (J386)
49-10 - Please Register/Activate - Intermittent
00913 - Window Regulator Switch; Front Right Driver (E81)
27-10 - Implausible Signal - Intermittent
01331 - Door Control Module; Driver Side (J386): Supply Voltage Too Low
49-10 - Please Register/Activate - Intermittent

But they seem to talk about the drivers door. Is this because we are right-hand drive and it is a German car?

Also, I don't have access to see what teh 49-10 and 27-10 bits mean.

Hi Phil,

The whole 'driver's-door-right-left-UK-Germany' issue is catered for by changing the car's software coding in the Central Control Module for Central Convenience (J393).
This module, referred to on the forum almost universally as the CCCU or just CCU, is the most fault-prone bit of electronics in the A2.

The CCCU is responsible for all manner of things, including the operation of the electric windows. However, given that your window works perfectly when controlled from the driver's door, it strikes me that your issue probably isn't here.
As an aside... when the CCCU does fail, it has been known to revert to 'Germany' mode... in other words it thinks the driver's door is on the left. It is possible that your CCCU has partially failed, but I can't confidently make that diagnosis based on your symptoms or your fault codes.

If I was you, I'd do the following...

Take the trim panel off both front doors and swap the door control modules over. The modules are 'sided', meaning they'll not physically fit the wrong way 'round. However, their electrical connectors and the internal electronics are the same, so you'll be able to wire them up the wrong way 'round.
If the fault stays on the passenger side, then we know your door control modules are both fine. If the fault moves to the opposite side of the car, then a dodgy control module would seem the likely problem.

Let us know how you get on...

Cheers,

Tom

Tom,

Thanks for the tip. Sounds like a job for the weekend. If it is the CCU on the way out is that a major outlay?

One of the error codes was:

01330 - Central Control Module for Central Convenience (J393)
52-10 - Supply Voltage Too High - Intermittent

... If it is the CCU on the way out is that a major outlay?
...

Lau from the German forum can fix them quite cheaply, it does take a couple of weeks though. The car can still be used without the CCU, although a lot of functions will be missing.
