I am rebuilding an engine and want to replace the alternator belt tensioner bearing only as the actual tensioner itself is fine, it it possible to just buy this bearings on it's own?

Not from Audi, but if you remove the failed bearing it should have a reference number on the rim so you may be able to buy a replacement from a bearing specialist. Just one example - http://www.bearingservice.com/products/bearings

Cheers Spike

Also worth checking the tensioner arm bush for wear. A worn bushing can allow the tensioner pulley to run out of square with the belt under load. Eventually the belt will jump grooves and shred.

Thanks for that, I disassembled the bearing from the tensioner and read the number from it and they are a 3202 or 3205 bearing which is 35 x 15 x 15.9 thick.
Got from eBay for £7.94 when my local bearing suppliers wanted £42!!
Hope I can press the old one out...

Hi...Did you manage to press out the bearing? Just wondering whether to order the whole assembly...but I like the idea of just replacing the actual failed part

£42 is steep but can remember from long ago both those numbers ring a bell, massive industrial usage, therefore making as much as they can, however check the cheap bearing, its cheap for a reason

Yes the bearing is cheap because you don't have to pay for the pulley or casting.
I did manage to press it out but it was a right bitch and in very tight so I heated it up with a blow torch in the end

So David, would you do it again..or get the whole assembly? Regarding the bearing...i will be buying a quality German/Japanese double sealed jobbie

Now I know how to just heat the bearing up I will be doing it again definitely and I did buy two bearings just for that purpose as I have a few of these cars.
