Gearbox oil change, worth it?

Hi everyone, my 1.4 SE petrol has done 95,000 miles so far, doing a lot of motorway miles and am now thinking about the things i can do to benefit the longevity of the car as i'm planning on keeping it as long as i can.

First of all, would anyone recommend changing the gearbox oil at this mileage? I know Audi say it's a sealed unit and should last the lifetime of the car but sill... i know how expensive gearbox replacements are.

Also can any garage do this or does it need to an Audi approved garage and what kind of cost am i looking at?

Any other things i can do to help the longevity of the car besides regular servicing?

Cheers

I changed mine a couple of weeks ago. There was a recommendation to do it after 10 years. It definitely feels smoother and the oil that was removed changed viscosity as it was being drained so something had degraded over time. Mine is an 04 plate TDi 90 with 92k miles.

Also used VW Bluemotion Gearbox oil which was recommended. 1.7 litres required for the job, and its £9 a litre from VAG.

Hi,

I've recently had mine changed, 1.4 SE 115,000 miles. I was worried about the condition of the oil and possible water contamination.

Luckily the oil that came out was just "very dirty", but there was still about the right amount and didn't look like runny porridge (water contamination).

Afterwards, the gear change is smoother and the gearbox slightly quieter. Unfortunately my gearbox is quite worn, the input shaft bearing make a bit too much noise and it whines a bit, but at least I know that there is good oil in there now.

I have all my servicing done a good local VAG specialist. The gearbox oil is really cheap, I think I paid about £7.50, the rest is labour.

regards

Andrew

Brilliant, thanks... big thumbs up for an gearbox oil change then!

Would 95k miles be about the right time to do it? It's an 02 plate.

I had the 5th gear change at 52K miles when the vehicle (A2 TDi 75) was 6 years old. Oil level was about 50%. Mike (aka Skipton) who did the change said low levels were typical. Where it goes I don't know ;)
