Chat Three new personal records for me

Birchall

Dick Chown Award 2016
Record one - just bought ANOTHER A2 (TDI of course) that now makes it SEVEN in the immediate family. This one is destined for our grandson just about to turn 16 so he can get to know this one, learn a bit about cars and then have a great car to learn in.

Record 2 - I have never owned a car with so many miles on it, I am now a mmber of the over 200,000 mile "club" this one has 228,000, but drivs every bit as good as my project A2 and my wife's A2 (both with less than 80,000 on them!)

Record 3 - and the most amazing one of all, the A2 I just bought was the cheapest car I have ever bought. It has a few cosmetic issues (a dent in the driver's door and lacquer peel - YES it is a RED one!!). It could probably do with new front discs.
It has recently had a new starter motor, clutch and flywheel and lots of other bills. Mot'd until March and it drives beautifully. Engine superb and gearbox spot on. how much did I pay? Wait for it £300 !!!!!!!! Bargain

Base model (no climate or anything else) but a vry usable tdi!!!

By the way, it is the darker red, not the bright red, what is the colour called please? (not Castle Red)

EDIT - I found the opriginal bill of sale and it is "Amulet" red.
- Also found a full service history (mainly Audi but then specialist over recent years
- also found every MOT (why is it that on a mega mileage car I find proof but when I buy a low mileage one there is never any proof!!)
- also receipts for the new clutch, flywheel etc. dated August this year

Worth the 200 mile rond trip for this one.
I have a search set up for TDI A2s on Autotrader and it sometimes brings up a bargain or two.

Pictures to follow later.

Just goes to show the secret to A2 longetivty is servicing servicing servicing!

Sounds like a bargain buy Steve. Should provide some good grandfather-grandson time for you :)

Just a brief update on the £300 A2 Tdi !!!

£9 for a wiper blade (and I needed to twist the arms to gain more clearance, it was scraping the windscreen and knocking on change of direction)

£7 for a pair of "white" headlamp bulbs

£50 for a used door in the right colour!!!!! (Amulet red)

and the car is perfectly usable and runs very sweetly with no knocks or squeaks from the suspension, it is a little cracker.

The interior was badly stained and so a visit to Sarge was called for. We left with a fantastic set of grey leather sports heated seats and my grandson is over the moon.

A BIG thanks to Sarge for the hospitality and the great seats (and I could see that he was aching to help with the swap over, but his pain prevented him from doing that)

A great drive home and 100 miles of hassle free super cheap motoring!! With a VERY VERY happy Grandson.

They are !

and they are very comfortable indeed.

Now we have to sort out the loom for the heated seats.

Well done Steve,
Sounds an absolute cracker for the money, that's a few brownie points notched up on Grandads armchair lol!
Seriously though, great to see a family looking after one another!
Cheers Jeff

We are very lucky,

Hi Steve, What a wonderful Grandad and Grandson (Welcome to the A2 world), it was great to see you again and meet the new A2 owner (probably the youngest A2 owner? - another record for you Steve? lol). A quick changeover on the seats just made the A2 into a really nice car with a few minor issues to deal with and it'll be a good un!

Hi,

I am not sure how old Matt's brother is but I know he is younger than 17 and may be a similar age to my grandson.
The cars do have an appeal to the younger drivers too (no shame in opening up that you own an Audi!!!)

The A2 is great for a young driver, so many safety aids and very easy to drive with high seating possible for extra visibility. The only downside being the thick A pillars, but once you are made aware of that blind spot that is OK too.

Also the tdi is not easy to stall and so marginally the better option for a learner, they can concentrate more on driving perhaps (not that the petrol, A2 is easy to stall, just that it might take a little longer to get used to?)

Cheers

Hi Steve,

Yes, that's correct. I suspect my brother and your grandson are very close in age; I would imagine just a few months difference! :) My brother will begin learning in the coming year. :p

Regards,

Matt

The car sounds great too, Steve.

I always like seeing the >200k miles examples; it really shows how well these cars stand up to use. Hopefully we'll be seeing some photographs soon! ;)

Regards,

Matt.

The car is now with my friendly mechanic having the following done

Service
Cam belt and water pump
Temperature sender (gauge goes up and down and doesn't settle or get to 90 degrees and stay there, like all other A2s I have had / driven)
New front discs and pads (and the pad wear warning wiring sorted)

When I get it back I will take some pictures of the bad bits.

Since it is a red A2, there is of course, some lacquer peel (all over the bonnet in this case) and the door has to be swapped.

Just had an interim report from my mechanic.

He says that after a thorough checkover it seems that there are only a few very minor issues, nothing major at all.
He was very pleasantly surprised at the overall condition for the age and mileage. That is great news.

He is having problems with the cam belt kit though, it looks like one of the tensioners seems to be different somehow, but he is convinced that he will be able to sort it tomorrow.

The underbonnet layout is quite different when compared to my TDI and that is an AMF, so this one must be a BHC engine? (although I thought that the cam belt kit would be the same). This A2 was first registered in 03/2002.

Steve B

I thought the BHC engine only came in in late 2003 so 53 plate onwards along with the slatted grille. Have you checked the engine number? Perhaps it's had a replacement engine...would make it even more of a bargain in my eyes.

Yes and it is worrying me a little. the underbonnet layout is very different so it is certainly not a straight swap for an AMF to BHC conversion.

It is at times like this that i am thinking " i should have followed my own advice and always check the chassis number!!!!!

i will ask my mechanic to text me the chassis number from the car and keep my fingers crossed!!!!!
