Hi Mark,
The armrest is part of the entire interior part of the door, i.e. they can not be separated.
I recognize your problem and I've read about other people that agree that this 'smooth part' is a strange construction that creaks when squeezed...
If you insist on removing the door trimming (so all of it) to see for yourself, proceed as follows:
- pry off the grill from the tweeter (in front of the door handle). A torx screw will show itself
- unscrew that one and the the other two, found when looking under an upward angle towards the armrest section.
- unclip the trimming, all around. First time will be VERY hard. Done it 6 times myself and the clips still hold quite well. Start at the bottom, where there should be a (single finger sized) hole in the trim. Pull away from the door. Expect loud bangs as the clips unhook. There are about 6 or 8 of them in total.
- then remove the trim by moving slightly out and upward (the trim 'hangs' from where it meets the glass)
- unhook the door handle's metal rod
- if needed, follow the remaining wiring towards a connector and unplug that too. but in general most leads are long enough to allow you to put the trimming on a front seat.
Fitting is in reverse order. Make sure you have all clips (white studs on black rubber foot) are in the door, not on the trimming. They could have come loose in the wrong way while ripping them out.
Now you can see for yourself that the trim is made of one part. Or at least: without screws.
About the rattle: maybe you can (periodically) spray some teflon or silicon oil inside the edges where the two materials meet. That's how dealers tend to solve rattles too.
Good luck
