BUT thankfully NOT by vandals!

I was on the phone at home when the door bell rang... Got outside and there my car's alarm was beeping away! The neighbours were standing outside their house (as they had broken their key in the lock of their front door!!) when a car had driven past and threw up a rock... and well... smashed my rear window!!!

It is not a laminated screen as the front one so lots of bits of glass everywhere and a big hole in the glass. But even though the hole is under the spoiler the whole thing got shattered. All around the edges and up to the top hinges! It was still cracking and making little noises as we stood there!!! Insurance was fantastic but had to pay £50 excess. Grrr... BUT as you can imagine no A2 rear screens in stock. So car will sleep outside tonight with the hole in it (I disabled the internal alarm sensor but kept the doors armed). They will call tomorrow to confirm if they have any of these screens in stock. Lets hope they do!

Thankfully windows are covered by the insurance. My front screen was £450 if I had to pay for it myself (if memory serves) This has a weird curve, the heated elements and is tinted with the spoiler attached to it... so I can just imagine the price!!!

One interesting thing about it all is that for the first time ever I did not have Noddy cars in my rearview mirror as I drove to the glass shop! And also no rear fin to bisect the view!

BUT I guess no surprise there: no glass to be found (yet) so the car is now in the AutoGlass lock-up to keep dry! Hopefully Audi UK has some glass to sell them soon!!! Grrr...

A very surprised AutoGlass just phoned me: AudiUK delivered the glass this afternoon. WAY WAY faster than they ever suspected! And guess how much it cost? Only £190 and that INCLUDES the rear fin!!!!! That is geat value for money I think. I will pick the car up tomorrow morning.

They got your rear window three times quicker than it took to get a little silver (yes, standard Audi silver) paint...

Johann sorry to hear your problem !!! Does the rear fin come part of the rear screen or is it just bonded on ?.

I took the old screen off when I smashed the glass in before driving. It has two brackets on each end that fits to the body but the rest of it along the length is bonded to the screen. Hence when they ordered it he said there were two types. I could not understand this but now know it is the longer fin of the 1,6 and 1,2 as the one and the normal shorter fin of the other cars as the other type.
