Engine & Chassis Number Location

I am a Newbie and about to collect a 2003 A2 1.4Tdi SE from a private seller later this week and would appreciate answers to my questions below:

1. Can anyone tell me where I can find the exact location of the Engine and Chassis number as I need to check these against the Registration Document before parting with my money?

2. I also need to do an HPI and vehicle check to make sure it is clear of Hire Purchase agreement etc. Can anyone suggest a service from which they had good clear and reliable information and which they would recommend?

3. This car I am buying has got 30k on the clock, registered March 2003, full Audi service history with mileage recorded and the price is GBP7800.00 - Am I paying to much?

Opinions and answers will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
Bill

Hi welcome to the A2 club.You should find the vehicle identification data sticker under the floor panel in the boot.There should also be the chassis number on the bottom of the passenger side front windsreen. I am sure someone will come up with an answer to your question of HPI.
Regards, Malcolm.

Hi Bill
In addition to the VIN plate in the windscreen there is a dataplate under the carpet in the front passenger footwell - see link to picture from our gallery
http://www.a2oc.net/pictures/showphoto.php?photo=460&cat=10
There is also a chrome plate inside the compartment under the drivers side false floor
The engine number is located on the front engine/gearbox flange.
This info was taken from Audi literature which I haven't checked myself.
Sorry I can't help with questions 2 and 3. Hopefully other club members can assist

Cheers Spike

I've not used the following personally but here are some suggestions from some recent research:

========== HPI ==========
In 2004 HPI is part of Norwich Union, the UK's largest insurer. Norwich Union is part of Aviva, the world's sixth largest insurance group.

HPI checks for vehicles that are stolen, written off, subject to outstanding finance, plate change, mileage, VRM & VIN check, make, model, derivative, not for sale.

Costs £40

========== MYCARCHECK ==========
mycarcheck.com is a trading name of The Vehicle Inspection Company (UK) Ltd., which has a contract with the DVLA and the Police Authorities, and is a subsidiary of CDL Group Holdings Ltd.

Provides:
# Stolen / Police Interest
# Write off / Accident Damage
# Scrapped by the DVLA
# Plate Transfers
# Former Keepers
# Full VIN / Chassis Check
# Make and Model
# Engine Number and Size
# Colour
# Imported or Exported
# Date First Registered
# Colour Changes

Cost £10

========== TEXTCHECK ==========
A mobile text service
Provides basic info for £3 and then you can request a fuller profile.

See http://www.textcheck.co.uk

========== Others ==========
Possibly resellers of HPI:

RAC Vehicle Status
AA (£37)
Number Plate Check (AA) (£37)
Car Data Check (HPI & AA)

Just to add my two-penneth - and it's one that you've all missed (Spike, surprised at you!):

The VIN number and type plates are shown in the attached capture:

Cheers,

Mike

If you've bought it then it can't have been too much! It's worth what you're prepared to pay.
