I agree. My mistake, I thought that the original G250 was part of the rack, and had a hydraulic connection, now I realise that it simply bolts onto the column. Apologies all round.Maybe but this isn’t the function of the g250 as that only measured the position of a shaft going into the steering column.

I'll have to assume that there is a sensor which is part of the J500 controller, and always has been. Keeps me happy!
I do think the noise is the PS Pump Motor trying to start, but not quite managing it, while drawing lots of power, hence the slow cranking.
Ignition off and on again, and all's well could be that the second start resets the pump controller, and all's well ... perhaps.
