Lol! They're jacking lugs so I can jack on them with the trolley jack, or use the jacking points and put axle stands under them. The A2 jacking points aren't parallel with the ground, but the bottom of these is.

August 00 overdue for replacement I thinkToday I have taken a look behind the ignition coil.
Potential hot spot?Today, I woke up to see a neighbour has a visitor. In a silver 1.4 Tdi with OSS. No sign of life in the house yet.
I would check the Injector on the crusty cylinder, although get them all checked for this sort of rebuild. Is there a lip at the top of the Cylinder Bores, other than just Carbon?Took the camshaft out and head off as well, it all looks pretty good for a high mileage engine. One piston is a bit crustier than the others though..

There is a very very small lip, barely notieceable, but it's there. This engine has done at least 185,000 miles apparently.I would check the Injector on the crusty cylinder, although get them all checked for this sort of rebuild. This is the much storied oil pump chain, it can indeed eat through the sump. Its relatively accepted that 180-200k miles and its time to swpa it out with new tensioners. Theres a guide on here but would be good to see another one! THe part kit is about Β£140 i think from febi..I stripped this engine down a bit more, had the sump off today amongst other things..
I wasn't expecting to find this in the sump.

Under the cover is this arrangement:

The chain drives the oil pump, but I guess it's main purpose must be as a counterbalance to the Crankshaft?

The chain must be very worn as the tensioner is actually pushing it so far over it is starting to eat into the casing!
This is often the case, the quality of this engine and design is unbelievable ,really is. Recon the injectors, oil chain kit and build her back up!Took the camshaft out and head off as well, it all looks pretty good for a high mileage engine. One piston is a bit crustier than the others though..

The other check is to turn each piston to the, and measure the gap from the piston crown to block face. If the crusty piston is lower than the other 2 it could indicate Easy Start has been used, and shortened the Con Rod! The lower compression may cause carbon build up.There is a very very small lip, barely notieceable, but it's there. This engine has done at least 185,000 miles apparently.
I can't really justify rebuilding this engine myself, but I hope somebody will. So if anyone out there fancies a tdi engine rebuild project?
Good lord that was luck!Today I had more jam than Hartley's and picked up a set of brand new still in the box roof bars at a ridiculously stupid price, goes to show there's still bargains out there to be found
Also a big thanks goes to Colin for collecting and delivering them for me
