An OpenSky is reborn!

liability

Hi all, not been around for a while...the A2 has been going well..touch wood :)
I am very happy to hear that some progress has been made in the broken sky saga, well done to all involved. Personally it seems clear to me that in offering a free replacement they have admitted it is a design fault...which it clearly is, although so far they have not been very helpful in that you have to drive to Bavaria to get it swapped over...most people down there have a working one by now anyway thanks to those specialists.
So, if they have admitted this then in my opinion they have an obligation to put this right in the UK under EU law. What is the difference? It is prohibitive and discriminative to force loyal owners to pay out for all the travel and accommodation. OK, so you have to have a full Audi service...that's fair enough..but why can't they say "get a full Audi service at your local dealer and we will fix your roof included". It is a long way from a recall which is what most of us would want. Also this would generate goodwill between owners and dealers and help long term sales and service revenue for Audi no end.
As things stand I won't be driving down to Germany, nor will my next car be an Audi. Come on Audi UK...change my mind for me !!

in general I agree with you.
But even in Germany there are a lot of dealers - and as I heared yesterday - even the official service at Audi that don´t know about this regulation Rinner does. Even in Germany there are only a few specialized dealers that know and know how to fix the problems of the OSS. I was in Münster, Northrine-Westfalia, there is one, too.

Thanks for that, Munster is a lot nearer for us in the UK...can you give some details of the dealer please?
Also, yes, I agree that repairing these is a specialist skill, but most dealers are able to replace them easily enough with the Audi jig. My local dealer quoted me a lot less to replace the unit rather than repair it as the labour hours are much less. It was still in the thousands though so not really a serious proposition. However if Audi will give them/us a replacement roof then that may be possible for a few more owners driving around in greenhouses!

lets see if UK dealers can help

Thanks.
I have this morning emailed several dealers in the south east of England to see if they can talk to Audi about this. I dont see why UK garages should lose business to German ones or why we owners should have to pay out to drive to Germany, or lose many days of our time, when we all live in the EU.
I will let you all know if any will help.

Oss

Well so far I have only received one reply, from Chris Smith at Audi Worthing...he has been very helpful and I will be calling him tomorrow. Pretty poor not to get even a reply from any of the other south east dealerships. I will let you know how it goes.

Don't make it too long because i am scheduled for a service and roof-repair the 14th as well and i hope to leave the place in the evening :)

Hi Falcon
I think we've seen yesterday on the rinner's park. Your a2 was dark grey.
You have a NL plate and a bike inside.
You said me hello and I ansewred.
I am sorry I didn't come to talk with you because I didn't realise it was you as because I haven't seen your post here.
I firstly thought it was timmus but the NL plate made me doubt.

I am booked at 7:30 pm. It's 6:40 now. I am going to give them my a2.

How was the repair of yours? What about the long life service?

A4 allroad 2.0 tfsi

Just back from Rinner's .... With a brown Audi A4 2.0 TFSI Fulloptions... I think it's a fair exchange. :p 170 or 200 hp i don't know exactly (2 exhaust pipes )
The beast is powerful but I miss the torque feeling at low rpm of my remapped a2.

Oh well , a last little backdraw : it is not iso fix. ( I have two babies)

Hi Ariles, that was me indeed. I already thought you were there to have your roof done one friday so i thought i show you my new roof :) I was just putting my bike i had been using all day (great biking area!) back in the car.
My repair was excellent. Before repair, it was still working but it would not fully open, so i was thinking the cables were the only thing to be replaced. When i picked up my car in the evening, i was amazed that my full roof had been replaced. They took out the complete roof and installed a new frame. The 2 moving glass panels have been re-used but the rest is all new. Fabulous! Also the longlife service was fantastic (oil filter, fuel filter, pollen filter and air filter). I brought my own castrol LL oil (was no problem) which was exactly the same as what they would have been using. They checked the complete car and did a brake fluid service. They also swapped the tire repair set which i could not find on the bill. In the end I had to pay 350 euro's. No money for a new roof with 2 years warranty and a 2 year's Audi Mobility service.
The people are really nice at Rinner, they fully take time for you, as if you just bought a brand new 50.000 euro car... I wish we had those dealers in Holland:)
How is your new roof? Same experience as I had?

350 euros, mine was 482 euros :(
You did supply the oil though which was 65 euros from memory...say that was without 20% tax so 78 euros...hmm....
I also wish we had a Rinner in my country, I know there is enough skill having seen an Audi tech remove, strip down & rebuild and refit a TT roof mechanism :(

ariles, falcon, do your new roofs seem slower opening the second panel, seem to almost stop to engage it?

Hi ariles

While your car is in for repair could you ask the guys about the best way to keep the Open Sky in good condition -
. The lubricants they use
. How to look after the seals etc.
. What to do with the cables and tracks (which are not really accessible)
. Any mods to do on a roof which is working ok to make it last longer
. Do they plan to offer an exchange service for failed roofs which over are 10 year old.

If you get chance, ask them to demonstrate the clean and lube procedure on your new roof.... so you can tell us all how to do it when you get back.

We all have our own ideas but it would be great if we could get some practical tips from the experts.

Cheers Spike

It would be much appreciated if anyone who has just been or is going to Rinner could provide any of the info above.
Nuttinnew found the P/N of the special lube so it would also be good to know if that specific product is still recommended

Hi Spike,

I've just returned from Rinner. The weather is beautiful today, so I'm going to spend the day outdoors, but I do have the answers to these questions. I'll do my best to do a write-up later this evening.

Cheers,

Tom

Hello all,
Booked in to Rinner for 25th May. Warranty stands as booked in before expiry date. Anyone have any tips for the trip over?
Sorry if this should be a new thread.

Currently, Dover to Dunkerque with DFDS Seaways is the cheapest way to get your car across the water. I went only last week.

Plan your route through Luxembourg and buy as much fuel there as possible.

Have a look at the link in my previous post.

Cheers,

Tom

I cannot say there is a slow down when opening the second panel. The new roof opens really smooth compared to the old one. I have made a vid when opening my new roof. I will upload that later on. Then you can compare if your roof opens in a similar way...

Mine does a small metalic noise on the second panel take off. What about yours ?
