An OpenSky is reborn!

My Bad Tölz / Rinner experience

Well !! as "Mein Deutsche ist so schlecht" (which means : My german is so bad ) the discussion was arduous for us.
The contact with Mr Rinner himsel was just Ok. The language barrier... We didn't talk a lot. Only the morning. Seems busy. Not a problem

The discussion bellow was in english.
Sometimes some german words came back to my mind so I used them.

Mr Rinner leaved after introducing Stefan, the OpenSky Specialist. I shook his hands and said that I recognize him because I saw his photo on their web site. Everybody laughed there. Nice to meet you Stefan, said I.

The waitress was very kind. Her english was better than the other's.
She proposed me what I thought it would be a COURTESY car.
- Do you need a car ? she said.
- A Car ? Yes, Of course:D . A familly one , by the way please. I have two babies. I was happy to hear this proposition.
She leaved and got back with an A4 Allroad key.
- So, you will have an A4 Allroad.
- An Allroad ? Very good !!:D Stefan laughed with me. seeying I was happy
- Here's the cost of the Allroad, she said on writing me 25€ or 29€, i don't remember
- Oh :p Ok no problem. I said, suprised during one second, to pay for a courtesy car (Here in France, a courtesy car is free)

I got then to my A2 with Stefan to show him the opensky. He controled its state to see if they will accept the car or not. He just laughed when I showed him the opensky didn't want to open. it stopped to move after 8 cm of translation. He said, ok no problem.
I asked if it will be replaced or repaired.
He said that if will be replaced.
....
He presented me the A4 then. I put the baby seats in it and took it.
I immediately did a trip of about 10 km around Bad Tölz for a test drive. took some pictures with it in the Blomberg ski resort.

I got back to the hotel (Altes Gästhaus, 3 stars, very good price/value hotel, 3 nights, 4 days. The cheapest familly 3 star hotel - Breakfast included) and took the whole familly. We took some nice pictures on a artificial lake near the Austian frontier.

At 11:00pm, Back to Bad Tölz to retrieve the DVD player's loom for the children. I forgot them in the A2. The Open sky was allready sorted. The A2 was waiting on the park its turn for the full service.

Back to the south. We passed the Austria's border in the Tirol Mountains
where the snow was still there on the top. We also took somme piccies of the typical/picturesque Tirolian houses.
what a beautiful country !!
I gave to my wife the A4 for a test road. Powerfull, comfy and very beautiful car but she prefers to drive the A2. this is my opinion too. We too agree that the A2 feels more like a toy. It's more funny to drive. And the torque FEELING of the remaped little 3 pot TDI is missing in the petrol TFSI (even 2.0L)

What else ? Not enough lumbar support (even set to the max). It broke my back.
No isofix too.

5:50 am; back to Rinner's to see if the A2 was sorted and waiting me outside on the park. No. I didn't want to stress them so I didn't ask them.
Back to the hotel.
At 6:00am, The Waitress called to say that the a2 is ready.
Back to Rinner's at 6:20am. I was the last client.
First question of the waitress :
- Hello Mr Ariles :) Is the tank Full as we agreed ?
- Of course, it is! So where is the bill ? :--)

Mr Cilik came then to me to explain me evey line of the bill. He begun by the end of the second page where I immediately took a look at the bottom : about 1940€!! of my goooood

During his explanation, I was searching my words to say my surprise and that Audi should take a part of it as agreed before coming to Bad Tölz.
He continued to explain and then he turned to first page where I saw an other amount : 482€!! Ahhh, did I think to my self, the 19xx€ should what I would have paied and the 482€ should be what I have to pay... whew !!! saved !!

So here's what they have done :
- little front bulbs replaced. the were out ! Good !
- headlight adjustment ! it was needed. I knew they were too low !! Good again!!
- Oiled every hinge on the car. Never thought I was necessary. Indeed ! Good !
- Pollen filter : Mine was 3 years old. Good again
- Fuel filter : Mine was 3 months old. Ok No problem. that was the deal.
- Long life Oil and oil filter ! Mine was 3 months old (505 01 - fixed interval). Ok No problem. that was the deal too.
- Steering oil changed : Mine was more than 4 years old. I've never changed it. VERY GOOD.
- Brake fluid changed. Mine was 2+ years old : well timed !! GOOD

- Air filter : As they saw It was a Green filter (Reusable as the K&N) they didn't touch it : Very good!
- VAG scan : Some minors defaults that I allready knew.
- Band-aid kit : why not. Not asked in France.

They also reported me that my pfelgen (Wheels) where illegal in Germany. Mr Cilik couldn't give me the technical reasons because the technicians didn't mention it on the bill. Strangely, my 15" wheels come from a Seat Ibiza. I keep asking why ?? I used to have the original harsh 16" sline ones. Replaced for comfort reasons when I put the koni FSDs.

Mr Cilik showed where to lube the roof : all the track rail, but he didn't mention the seals. He said that it has to be lubed at least oncee a year. 2 is recommended.

He also and gave me a photocopy of the fat tube! yes a photocopy of the real tube. the same timmus mentionned.

Of, something else to add : The 482€ mentioned above includes the price of the a4 Allroad rent for 100Km.
I also paid 38€ more because I did 200 km with it  Didn't realized because of the beautifull landscapes.
So The pure price for the opensky replace and the full service was 452€ !!

So All I have to say is Thank you M Rinner and your team. DANKE SCHöN!!
I have been well recieved and my a2 very well looked after. Excellent value/price that is impossible to obtain here in France.

We passed the last day in the old picturesque Bad Tolz part. The last evening was in the stunning Alpamare natural Spa ressort ('til 9:30pm). A must see.

On the return to Paris, we took advantage of the famous unlimited german Autobahn : 200 km/h ( 124 mph ) touched on a slope. (I just have the testify of my wife for this...). the car felt well. no vibrations.
+180 km (112+ mph) was frequent, fingers in the nose, I should say. The car was very stable. I have several videos of them.
The rest of the time, cruise control was set sometimes on 120km/h sometimes on 130 Km/h (75 or 81mph) with 5.6l/100km (say 51mpg) given by the pessimistic board computer - (which is still really good for this small 3 cylinders I think )

I must say that german are very secure drivers, thanks to the unlimited speed but not only. Even when limited, they carrefully keep the security distance. I haven't seen any right overtaking (during 2000 km+ ). GOOD !!
In France, I must confess that we have have many many dangerous cust oms because of the speed limits but not only. BAAAAD !!

We did the 900 km in once (stopped once only, in the French side).
If you have children, I must recommand DVD players. It's a must have. Depending on the childen, you could do at least 400km /250miles without hearing them.

I will upload somme piccies of the landscapes and open sky opening video soon.

video opening the replaced OSS

I will upload a video too.
Mine does a small metalic noise on the second panel take off. What about yours ?
Hereby 2 video's from the replaced OSS:

It does make a noise when opening the second panel, but I only heard it by seeing the video (did not notice it before). I think it is the rubber sealing squeeking...

Thank you :)

I'm sure mine had a more obvious 'pause' or step as it opened the second panel and it seemed to slow down a lot, almost half speed. This was with the engine running while operating it and a battery that had been fully charged.
It appears I have problems but they're not for this thread.

Thanks for the write-up, it sounds like you had an enjoyable break as well

You're welcome!
Enjoyable, off course it was :).
If it was to do again, I would stay there longer.
I forgot to mention that on the Way to germany, we took a break in a hotel in Kehl near Strasbourg, on the German side of the frontier with France . We had a first nice introduction with Germans people. The name of the hotel was Krone Odelshofen ( Odelshofen is the name of the small village).

In Bad Tölz , typical genuine Bavarian clothing was something interesting to see.
People are still keeping their customs on a side and make one of the best cars in the world on a another side.

@falcon : thank you for your upload. Your OSS seems to work very well.
I've also recognized your dark Green a2 ;-)

I'm just back from lubing the seals with silicon based lube and I can confirm that I have a metallic click when the second panel takes off.
I can here something on yours too but it doesn't seem to be metallic . The sound is a little windy on my iPhone. I'll listen to it on a computer for a better sound.
I'll post mine soom

@ ariles: Did you buy the silicon lubrication at Rinner? Strange to have the metallic click, but with 2 years warranty I would not worry too much...

Audi A2 OSS Free UK Repair (Pending)

Hello All,

I've been an A2OC peeping tom for years now and this is finally my first post. Well, I spent a very well received phone call with the Audi guys in South Munster (http://www.audi-partner.de/de_partner/p_68161/de/service/team.html)
and they were superbly helpful! Basically I did not want to drive all the way down to south Germany (Rinner) to get the Audi covered OSS repair unless I had to. The Munster guys ran my VIN number, checked my service history (there you need a full audi history) and straight away told me that I qualify for a free repair/replacement. The only kicker is that they need the car first and it could take up to a week though they said probably not.

So now high on success, I've called Audi Wimbledon and I told them that Audi Germany ran my ride through the system and that it qualifies for the OSS fix/replacement program. I was expecting them to tell me to f-off but no! He said, for me to bring it in and they will diagnose the problem and then check it with Audi UK. I know this could mean nothing but I explained to him the situation with people having to travel to Germany just to get the kind of customer service you'd expect from Audi (in this case, free replacement/repair of a design-fault-ridden system), and he seemed quite assured that this is something they can look at and move forward! So let's keep all appendages crossed and see what happens. The downer so far is that the garage dude said they're not allowed to speak to Audi Germany. What a load! Probably because Audi Germany recognizes customer service and knows when to own up to a problem. Judgement day for my ride is the 4th of May so let's see what happens. I'll keep you posted.

Anybody ever have the Audi gods shine down positively on them in the UK regarding the CSS (Closed Sky System)? Maybe I'll be the first?!

Cheers,

Michael

All appendages duly drossed for you (us/we/everyone because places in the UK could still be closer for peeps from the northern mainland):)

Rinners repair feedback : Bad and Good News

Hi Guys

As you should know, Rinner just repaired my opensky last week (04/15/2011)

Some days later, I noticed a metallic click on the second panel take off. The good news is that it seems that it has gone for now. No more worry about it.

Now, the bad news : my open sky doesn't close perfectly anymore on the left side. as before the repair. there is a gap of almost 5milimeters
pictures below.
it seems to take it's definitive place, maybe ...

I wonder what to do. Write to Rinner again ? Is it going to be worse ? :.(

this video is when the open sky closes well but with a metallic click done by the second panel opening
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_1nTstOFA8

On this second video. No more noise but the closing is not perfect. a small gap remains on the left side

Hi Ariles
I think if I were you I'd be phoning Rinner straight away, and email them the photos/ videos you've taken.

Well I didn't want want to tempt fate and say so earlier but I have mine booked into Audi Worthing on the 3rd...they have checked my VIN and even though some of my history has been lost (I am getting a full service done there also) with what they have about my car on their system they have agreed to repair or replace it pending inspection. They have a goodwill authority from Audi who will pay for the parts and labour involving the OSS. I also had emails back from Eastbourne Audi who said they could do it there and Crawley Audi who said they wanted to know more...though I am going with Worthing because they have been very helpful plus they have an Audi jig...there are not many of those in the UK and one lives there. Plus Worthing has Macari's fish and chips!! :) . I am hoping they will replace the roof, rather than repair the old one (doubt they can anyway!) as the newer design is much better and more reliable.
They expect to have the car for a few days and are providing a courtesy car.
So wish me luck and I have said to the manager there that if all goes well he may get some more takers from the club.

Hi Mate
Can you provide copies of what you sent and what replies you got to back up the promise of a free repair/replace by Audi UK dealers - as this I think is a huge breakthrough for all of us. I'd like to approach, say, West London Audi (my nearest dealer) and get them to agree to this as well as that would certainly be preferable to driving 2000miles to Germany if/ when my OpenSky goes ping as it does judder quite heavily now even with a recent lube.

I think I can see the problem on your video. The locking hook has gone loose (it rotates backwards) so that your front glass panel can not shift under it correctly. You should be able to see that when you stand on the passengers side and watch the locking hook inside the car while closing the roof.

I made a print screen from your video where you can see the difference between the position of the locking hook. It changed position in the second video where you show your problem.

You should be able to tighten the locking hook with a torx screwdriver, but before you can reach this screw you need to unclip the sun-blinds. Here you can find how to do that.

On this page, user "a. mundt" describes how he did it from post #223 and further.

I would definately take a look whether you can tighten this hook in the right position yourself!

Hi there,
Your roof has to be broken or they can't help you. It has to be a genuine fault and not one caused by some other actions or damage.
But you should talk to them about yours as it sounds like it's about to go.
I would recommend you email a few dealers in your area...some want to help and some dont...and some are better than others in understanding the OSS. Then talk on the phone to the most helpful people.
They asked me for my reg number and VIN number (on your log book).
They then have to do a goodwill check on your vehicle within the Audi system and that should come up with the good news.
If you dont have a full Audi history then tell them that as long as your last full service was done by Audi then that ought to be enough...they may have your car history on their system anyway...it is unreasonable to expect any owner to have the whole history of a 9-10 year old car. I am getting a full service at the dealers which is due anyway.
Let us know how you get on..but even if you have to drive down to Worthing it's a nice trip to the seaside and a lot nearer than Bad Tolz!

Hi there - yes I realise it has to be totally borked, and mine is still operating (albeit in a juddery manner at the first couple of inches of travel). But the point is is that you have been able (it would appear) to set a Precedent with Audi UK. Therefore if you could provide the email copy you used to get Audi UK to agree to this, plus the follow-up correspondence you received from Audi, then that means all of us who try the same avenue now have unambiguous evidence of the Precedent set by Audi UK - which helps us all.

Getting Audi UK to honour this has been something that I know many have invested a lot of time and effort in in the past so this should be seen as something of a breakthrough.

Yes, I have been trying for over a year myself. I don't want to copy any personal emails between myself and the dealers at least until I have had it fixed...until then if people follow what I set out earlier then they should be able to get things moving. I worded it with the south-east dealers that this goodwill gesture by Audi was available in Germany and that seems unfair to them in terms of trade lost to German garages...then it is up to your dealer (my closest one was not very helpful at least until Worthing became involved). They need to help and sort it out with Audi. I believe another member has also done this in the UK and his is booked in for the 4th of May...but it is all pending inspection and confirmation.
I will post full details of how I go on after my visit. I will believe it myself only after it has been done as I have had let-downs in the past
