2 stroke oil in diesel...anyone tried it?

Hi. I've been mixing 2-stroke oil with Diesel for several years for the 1.4 TDI and fully recommend it to any PD Diesel engine user (also to any Common Rail engine user). All benefits have been listed already here. In Germany especially Taxi drivers swear by adding 2-stroke oil to their diesels.

The best positive effects ("quiet" engine + lubricating/cooling/cleaning the injection system + lower fuel consumption) are achieved by mixing 1:150, meaning 200 ml into a 30 l tank.

Be sure to buy only semi-synthetic oil featuring the combined specification of

API TC + ISO L-EGC + JASO FC

since that type oil generates virtually zero % residues while burning. Please don't take L-EGB or L-EGD or others...

This post fills me with confidence! Thanks Schnelletrecker.

Thanks, so it is not my imagination my car runs better on semi-synthetic 2 stroke oil from Shell. Unfortunately adds to the cost.

So does it matter if its semi-synthetic 2 stroke oil or fully-synthetic 2 stroke oil

Well, fully-synthetic 2-stroke oils produce plenty of unwanted ashes during the process of combustion in a diesel engine.

Often 2-stroke oils are coloured (red, yellow, etc) which has no negative influence on the performance in our special application.

In respect of the sort of diesel it is advisable to tank up with the regular/lowest priced diesel your petrol station offers. Those overpriced "doped" diesel variants do not deliver better results than cheaper standard diesel fuel when combined with the right semi-synthetic 2-stroke oil. And these so called "premium" diesel fuels are inferior to standard diesel when it comes to lubricating properties.

Thank you

maybe we should list the actual makes so its easier for people to find the right type rather than searching for numbers and letters etc, for example shell semi or silkolene injector etc etc

Now I'm confused. I thought it was mineral oil that had to be used & have seen that Tesco sell Castrol Actevo 2T for just under 6 quid a litre. Is it OK to use this one?

If you are in Tesco then their own brand (it's red) is fine. It fits the Jaso FC criteria and costs £5. It's reasonable quality mineral based oil and works well in our 1.4 tdi.

The really expensive fully synthetic oils are the ones to avoid

You may purchase the following oil made by well known swiss oil/grease manufacturer MOTOREX.

MOTOREX "TWO STROKE 2T"
Semi-synthetic 2-stroke engine oil for light motorcycles.

- low smoke
- for pre-mix and separate lubrication

Specification:
JASO FC, API TC, ISO-L-EGC

Available in bundles of 1 L or 60 L.

P.S. There are two more semi-synthetic 2-stroke oils by Motorex named "FORMULA 2T" and "SCOOTER 2T", but they come with the wrong ISO-L spec. Here in Germany we normally use other brands (Liqui Moly, Meguin, Ravenol) of type L-EGC semi-synthetic oil but those are not available in UK I believe.

P.P.S.
You may take a look at this mega long thread started in year 2005. http://www.motor-talk.de/forum/2-takt-oel-dieselkraftstoff-t623039.html which (alongside many other threads in different forums) concludes that using the correct 2-stroke oil definitely does clean the PD elements or CR and helps for lower emissions and lower consumption. Also chemists and mechanical engineers seem to like the idea of mixing... :)

Ok I brought some Mobil Extra 2T Semi Synthetic, 2 Stroke Engine Oil today from the Esso Garage, it has codes which I think are the same as the ones listed, but would like to check first before putting it in my tank :)

& do I put this in, then fill up or does it not matter to much ?

Thanks :)

I tend to put the 2-stroke oil in first then fill on top to wash through and mix the diesel/oil together

Also.....make sure you have a funnel of some description as you cannot just pour it in to the tank
I use a cut down highland spring bottle (a 300ml one) and it fits perfectly.

Yes this is what I was thinking, oil first then the diesel will mix it up

So is this 2 stroke oil the correct one, the codes look the same but in a different order.

I will find some cheaper oil, but wanted to give this a try first, so got this one.

Here's a pic of injectors pulled from a year 2003 Y25DT Opel diesel 110 KW engine (identical to BMW M57 engine).

Compared to injector No2 (80000 km total, therof 5000 km of usage with 2-stroke oil) injector No1 (120000 km total, thereof 40000 km of usage with 2-stroke oil) shows very little signs of deposits.

This seems to be one of the least expensive UK suppliers of the recommended type oil:

http://www.fwrm.co.uk/index.php?route=product/search&filter_name=motorex two stroke

BTW the results of TÜV / MOT emission tests for diesels, especially the soot measurement, are noticeably better when using the 2-stroke oil continuously - with or without having a particle filter installed.

Pictured below is my "2-stroke oil station" featuring handy re-usable 200 ml plastik bottles.

A bit of science has been injected into this thread, if you'll excuse the pun.
Excellent post, Schnelletrecker. Thanks!

Tom

here here Tom well done Schnelletrecker for the info---as one of the early posters(with a negative opinion) im tempted to try it now.

cheers mike

I filled up today & added 150ml of 2 Stroke oil for the first time, so will see how it feels

I think you will find 150ml is too little for first fill and probably works out at less than 1:250 which wont have too much impact when taking into account the fuel already in the tank. I would put in at least 250ml for first fill and then experiment with a ratio of between 1:150 and 1: 200. I personally find around 1:175 is fine for my car, and less than 1:200 is not as effective.

Oh Okay thank you, next time I fill up I will add 200ml :)

I totally agree with Tom, having been rather sceptical, particularly about the merits of the low ash 2T oils. I'm still a believer in the premium diesel fuels though, and did not notice any improvements in smoothness etc when dosing BP ultra with 2T oil.

I found the easiest way to add the oil is to use a Redex or similar 250 ml long neck bottle (I had an empty one in stock) - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Redex-Fue...le_Oils_Lubricants_Fluids&hash=item2ebf1636d6

Cheers Spike
