anyone with a VAGCOM diagnostic unit near to Skipton in North Yorkshire, able to scan my 2002 a2 tdi/se to help me sort out the beeps???

The occasional 4 beeps when starting were the first symptoms on my 2001 TDi and this gradually progressed into the alarm sounding at regular intervals. This is one of the few times when you'r thankful the alarm is so feeble.
I think the 4 beeps are just an indicator to there being problems with the alarm system. In my case it was definitely the back-up battery within the alarm module which stopped holding its charge but I know Humps had different problems so its worth having a diagnostic scan to check if there are other issues before changing the module.
Charging the battery regularly may top-up the alarm back-up battery but if its on its way out, will only delay proceedings, particularly as the weather gets colder.

yes, it is a little weird. I had the four beeps first, then random alarm going off. I was ready to replace the siren unit but then I also had VAG-COM and went off another direction to investigate. In the end, I can only attribute my 'alarm and beep fixed' status to a new car battery, although i still cannot fully explain it. May be Spike is right, siren unit's backup battery could depend on the charge level of the main battery.

I offer my experience of the 4 beeps syndrome in case it is useful to anyone else.
I have a 2001 1.4TDI which I have had since new and still with the original battery.
4 beeps on turning the key started a few weeks ago. This was followed by regular but random alarm activation, sometimes with and sometimes without the sounder going off.
I read about the experiences others had with great interest and was preparing for a long haul trying to discover the cause. I was quite impressed by the ten year life of my battery which still turned over the engine quite happily and started it up on the first turn but thought that it was about time to change it.
To cut a long story short, I fitted a new battery and the beeps and random alarm activation have ceased.
