A breaker restored!

Hi,

RESULT !!!!!!!!

I was being too gentle with the OSS and with a gentle bit of persuasion it sprang into life !!!

Gets stiff as it approaches the rear portion but I haven't managed to ease that yet, but a working OSS is a bonus !!!

Shame the engine didn't suddenly spring into life, but without any mechanical crunching or tinkling noises it was turning over. But it would do that even if the cambelt had snapped and done the damage to the pistons / valves already.

But as I have said I have budgeted for an engine anyway!!

Should know if I need an engine or not when I get chance to investigate further.

I hope I am not boring everyone with this !!

Phew, just got in to see it sitting on the drive at last.

The 18" wheels are Sooo ugly that I am buying five paper bags ( 4 to cover each wheel up and one to throw up in if any of the other bags blow away!!!)

LOL :)

Now that you received the car, you can rest your mind a little, and emotional roller coaster ride stops :) these situations result in hair loss ...lol

Never a dull moment !!!

I did a basic check on the car before I bought it,to see if it had any accidents etc. (free) and it came up clear.

But I just found an App for the iPhone that gives you a more detailed check for £2.99.

It came up with "Stolen !!!!" - "This car MAY have been stolen, it has a "marker" on the stolen car register.

I nearly spat out my anti stress pills !!!

But it gives you a number to ring (not a premium line, so not a trick).

I rang them and they carried out a full check and it turns out that the private plate that it had on it in the past was put on a car and THAT car was stolen !!!

LOL

PHEW again!

But this does prove something, if you are buying a car ALWAYS do the full history check (HPI or similar) BEFORE you buy it!!!

I'd apply for the V5 and also put it on sorn, both straight away. You'll probably need to call them to do the sorn as you've not V5 or any tax reminder have you?

Hi,

Good advice and I am a step ahead of you on that, I have filled in the V62 for the log book and as for the SORN< I had a fine for that on my old taxi.
I had stripped it down and sold virtually all of it and was just left with a chassis and not much else. It was on SORN and I missed the reminder and they fined me and charged me back tax (just a little) for not renewing the SORN.

And this A2 has been unlicensed and not on SORN for nearly 4 years, how did the previous owner get away with that. I definitely need to let them know ASAP or they might try to get me for the last 4 years of road tax!!!!

Hi

Looks like the CCU is busted too.

The remote key was not working (not surprising after a long lay up) Wouldn't pair with any method.
Changed the battery and that caused problems, the alarm started going off.
I noticed that when I pressed the lock the interior light went off while the button was pressed it then came on again when released and no locking. Holding the key in the lock and turning it fully one way or the other and holding it there made the lock click on and off in quick succession.

The scan indicated a problem with the CCU but most of it was in German!!!

Basically it is busted !!!

SO I am looking for a 8Z0 959 433 Q (the unreliable older version!!!

The car must be worth a grand. Even if you end up breaking it for parts. Surely the shell would weigh in for good money seen as how its aluminium. I've got my fingers crossed you get that engine running without a serious investment in either cash or labour.

Best of luck to you

Yes,
there is no way I will lose money on this if I strip it, but I want to avoid that.

The issues are all resolvable and WASSAP has offered most of the parts I need in one go!

So I wil be spending a happy few weekends gradually getting this cute little A2 back on the road.

Really enjoying this thread, takes me back to when I did similar things but with BMWs. And yes I did buy one that was a stinker! Every Ecu was fried. Didn't even cover my costs and that is without adding my time.
Best of luck with this one, sounds a goodun.

You dont get much for the shell unless you strip ever last bit of wiring, plastic and other non aly stuff of it.They just give you scrap metal value.

Hi,

Latest instalment

The OSS is now fully working - RESULT
DSCF1418.jpg

This is how dreadful the wheels look (anyone who wants them I will be selling them soon (as soon as I can!!!) They have been badly kerbed mainly on the edge of the rim! Would swap the wheels (no tyres) for a standard set of wheels and tyres (even in poor condition).
They fill the arches very nicely and I plan to have 18s on the "keeper" but man are these ugly!

DSCF1420.jpg

Cambelt has NOT snapped and there are no holes in the block, when the starter is turning, no "metallic noises etc." the oil shows no sign of metallic bits and the coolant is not showing any sign of a head gasket problem. So the engine MIGHT be OK, I will find out later this week !!

So far so good!
(apart from the smell inside, but 4 years on a farm is not going to make it smell nice!)

What was up with the OSS, Steve? What did you do to sort it?

Ta,

Tom

Hi,

Basically nothing wrong with it.

It had been standing for 4 years and so I wasn't going to force anything.

When I pressed the switch I could here the relay click, but I released the switch straight away not wanting to damage it.

A bit of gentle tapping (with the palm of my hand!) around the edges of the glass to try to break the rubber seal (not the glass!!!)
Then a longer press on the button and it sprung into life. So I lubricated as much of the rails as I could and eased it back bit by bit. It started to stick again as it reached the rear opening, but that too was just stuck on the seal.
A bit more edging it further and further back and then lubricating all of the runners and that was it !!! a BIG Phew !!!!

I priced in that the OSS would be U.S. after being standing for so long and since it is a 2001 after all.
I also priced in an engine swap/rebuild, but I may not be so lucky there, but the signs are good so far!!!

I was glad to see that the cambelt had not snapped, but unfortunately it had slipped FOUR TEETH.

This was due to the belt tensioner collapsing so a lesson for anyone who just replaces the belt - DON'T !!!!!
Use the full kit of parts when renewing the belt. And if you are buying a car that claims to have had the belt replaced, ensure (if you can) that the receipt included ALL of the parts required.

The chances are that the car now has engine damage, at least to the valves and probably to the pistons too.

So it is a case of getting the head off and seeing what damage has been done.

If it is just valves, which is a very remote possibility, but with just a few teeth out it MIGHT have just bend the valves (I wish), that would be repairable
But if it has done ANY damage to the pistons at all then I will be replacing the engine.

I will let you know what the "head off" reveals.
