Autohaus Rinner: OpenSky!

I've got the longer 5th, cruise control and the mini front spoilers from the FSI, but none of the other aero mods. With the other bits and pieces, I might have squeezed out another few mpgs.
It certainly has done my engine some good, though 4.2litres of LongLife oil has also helped. I've just been for a drive along the southern coast of The Lakes with all the windows and the roof open in glorious sunshine. The car was running very nicely indeed! :)

That's a great MPG average, nice one! Do you have any of the aero or 5th gear mods installed? It does show that a good long run really helps stretch the car's legs a bit doesn't it - probably did the engine a world of good.

Also Tom, my OSS is currently working and I wonder if Rinner offer the replacement service for OSS’s that have not yet failed. As the plastic components are prone to failure (and I do have a locking hook that has broken), I would probably be interested in getting mine replaced to avoid problems in the future.
Would you know if this is possible – unfortunately I don’t speak German otherwise I’d call them myself.

Cheers

Jeff
Hey guys,

my name is Peter. And as you can see at my bad english: I'm german. Sorry for that.

I was at Rinner last year to get my OSS checked cause of the vibrating operation. Mr. Thomas did clean and grease the guide rail but it took no effect.
So he said that I should use it and hope that it will brake down in the right way to get it renewed. A substitution in advance is sadly not possible.
(all these took half an hour and was done at no charge. I like those guys and the way they do their work.)

... Having someone sit on the roof while you try and open it might help your cause!? :p
If my system is still working in the end of the summer, well, this can be an option

Cheers,
Peter

Hello Peter,

Your English is great compared with my German.

Thank you for the information, it's very nice of you.

- you can see how you might conceive doing a convertible soft-top A2 if you had an OpenSky car to start with, ha ha!

No, don't start planting ideas!

For comparison, my 1.4 petrol on the same trip did 1703 miles on 37.41 gallons, 45.52mpg average with a low tank of 39.7 and a high of 51.9 (oddly on 91ron!). Hopefully I'll do better in August...

In the meantime I think I'll be spending some time on this site...

long life interval

Hi Everybody.

At Rinners they have put Longlife Oil (SLX Professionnal Powerflow Longlife III audi 5w-30) in my car but it's seems that the computer is not informed of that. It looks like it's still on fixed service because when I check the next service on the dashboard, it says 14300 Km (fixed interval is 15000km)

@falcon, nuttinnew and timmus : What about yours ? Can you confirm that?

I do have VagCom but I don't know the procedure to check it. Can somebody help ?

Thanks

I checked it and yes, for me it was on the fixed service interval as well. Here is how you can change it to variable with using the program Vag-Com:
Go to [17-Instruments], then to [Adaptation-10]
- change group 43 to 050 (for 50000 km max) and save (first test to make save available)
- change group 44 to 730 (for 730 days max) and save
and most important to apply the variable status:
- change group 45 to 004 for a diesel (002 for petrol and 001 for fixed service)
Now you run on variable interval. When you want to reset the days as if you just performed a service, go to [17-Instruments], then to [Adaptation-10], change group 2 to 000 and save.
That's it!

More and more people in the know are recommending fixed service intervals for our cars, particularly as they get older. The A2 uses very basic data for defining the long life service intervals and does NOT analyse the oil in any way. As engines wear more contaminants from the combustion process get past the rings and soot in particular depletes the anti wear additives in the oil but the engine cannot measure this.
Rinner seem to be very switched on so I'm sure they deliberaetly set the fixed service intervals to maximise engine life.

Good point! For me, driving 15000 miles / 25000 km a year, I believe the longlife oil can do more than the 15000 km specified on a fixed interval. That is why I changed to a variable interval of 30000 km.

Spike are you saying the A2 does measure oil quality directly, or that it doesn't? Your post isn't clear...

Well spotted Dan. I missed out the critical word 'NOT'
The A2 only has oil level and pressure sensors so the ECU 'estimates' oil condition from temps, duty cycle and load factor data.
I've corrected my post so hopefully it makes more sense now.

hesitation

I am hesistating now to put it longlife....

I did some maths that give me 6200miles / 10000km a year so what's the best compromise for me ?
How to take advantage of this longlife oil ?

In general, longlife oil is virtually the same price as 'fixed service' oil. I have always used longlife oil but changed it every year so I suggest you do the same.
In fact Audi now specify the same VW 507.00 spec oil for both std and longlife services.

Open Sky - Rinner's

Hiya

Would just like to say what a great post along with others who have posted in the past, I have been in contact with Rinner's for approx 12 months trying to arrange to take my A2 for the OSS, I may finally be closing in on a date and am just trying to work out the travel details etc, I live in the West Midlands and have worked out that it will be approx 14 hours door to door and have 6 days to do it in, we are going to try and double it up with some skiing as it doesn't look a million miles away from ski resorts (make a short holiday of it for the family) to compensate for such a long drive. I totally agree with you about not trying to do it on the cheap, my car is due a cam belt change and am considering asking them to do that as well. I may contact you shortly to pick your brains if you don't mind and once again thank you for the post.

Please don't forget the continental rules about winter tyres and chains.

Bret

Good point, Bret. I obeyed the continental rules when I went; in the photos in my first posts, you can see the headlight glare stickers and the high-vis jacket in the boot. Luckily, I went outside the period when winter tyres were a legal requirement, as I still don't have any. Police are aware that UK cars are often in breach of the law and do not hesitate in making you face the consequences.
Also, Bavaria in winter does merit winter tyres!

Hello Tom

Bought my first A2 with OSS and had it now for almost 2 months. First month no troubles opening the sunroof but the last few times the last sunroof doesnt wanna open, it literally sounds pop and stops at the second not opening. First sunroof opens and closes without any troubles.

I love reading you thread and it has helped me informationwise a lot!!

I have a good friend of mine is german but who at this moment lives in sweden. I will use the help of him just to call Autohausen Rinner to double check if my 2004 model will be fixed and that what you are writing of still counts.

Thank you a lot! Great post. Tomorrow the verdict will tell if this will go for my car as well and if they still offer this service of a warranty, i would much like a mkII OSS.
Once again, vielen dank!!

Kein Problem. :)
The OpenSky warranty should not be a problem for you with a 2004 model. Get in touch with Rinner now and arrange to have the work done when you next need the car servicing, as they will probably insist that you buy a LongLife service anyway.
They claim the money for OpenSky replacement from Audi HQ, so by insisting on you having a service with them, they attract further business through their familiarity with the OpenSky system. I see no reason for them to have stopped offering this.

Viel Glück,

Tom

I called them this Thursday. Had my german friend speak to them. All well, still possible. Need to book a month(4 weeks) ahead of time they said. 2
Ful days to fix it, they asked of my year model, what my problem was with the OSS in specific. Said, they an fix. I will get a courtesy car.
So all well, you were spot on!
Im planning to fix it this coming summer.

Does anybody know how much Audi Rinner charges for changing an OSS on a car with no warranty?
