Best oil for 1.4 TDI with high mileage

car is booked in for a service this week , its a 1.4 TDI thats done 155k miles , is it still best to use Castrol Edge 5w - 30 or something different , reason I ask is the previous owner had an oil can in the boot thats 5w - 40 oil

Its most important you use the correct VW oil spec. For our diesel engines, VW507.00 is the latest spec for both std and long life services. Castrol Edge 5w-30 meets this but I'm not sure about the 5w-40 grade.

Never come across a 5w40 oil that meets 507.00. They are usually just good for 505.01 (fixed intervals). What is the name of the oil in the boot?
 
Just called into Halfords Castrol Edge was £46 for 4 litres and Mobil 1 5w - 30 ESP was on offer 20% off for £40 for 5 litres so I bought the Mobil 1
