Productive hour and a bit today.

Fitted the metallic black bonnet (car is gloss) so the old on is ready for respraying over winter.

You can see the state of the original one, just wow! Must admit the colour difference is annoyingly very subtle.(let's see how long it takes me to get round to painting old one 😀)

Fitted fresher glove box and ashtray which not only stays closed but has the light working.

Fitted the heated mirror set.

Also fitted the leather sport gear knob and steering wheel. I refurbed the steering wheel first and it's just waiting for some moisturiser in a few days. Came out really really well.

Also then adjusted the boot! Hurray what a simple joy, shuts under its own steam, perfect.

Feeling like the car has turned the corner and is motoring away now, very satisfying.
On my commute I ponder the benefits of buying £2.5 to 3.5k A2 over what I've done here. At first I always think that's the way to do it, then I view some cars and realise they all need work regardless, a clutch, a turbo, a fuel pump, AC doesn't work, headlining sagging, seats a mess etc etc. So I figure as I have limited but enough skills I may as well buy cheap as I can with a solid enough body and do the mechanicals and learn some things

This way it has rewarded me with a similar outlay in price, but a rewarding journey of constant improvement, meeting friends on the way and learning new skills. Of course I never budgeted for the head being porous but that's the risk, soke you win...

I now have a deep connection with this car!

The next load of jobs looks.something like this :

New refurbed wiper arm to fit.

Fit my stored pepperpots with stored winter tyres and new centre caps.

Deep polish for winter.

Refit the undertray (bolt up in wheel arch has sheared)

Respray and fit bonnet.

Will endeavour to keep the car, however come December and January the new mortage will be kicking in. I have to sell the vw van T5, which hurts, leaving me with the need for a towbar larger car to replace it....but that's for 2024.

Try giving the ebony black bonnet a machine polish with some cutting compound. When well polished ebony goes darker so May be even closer.

Did 400 miles in the car yesterday, got anice milage claim of £165 (spent just £40 on fuel) so that was a bonus on top of the car actually making the journey and easily too! Cruise control a dream on the M69 and A46.

My firs full tank brim to brim with the new turbo on the car has returned 69MPG average. So the engine must be running well. Got around 600 miles out of the tank maybe could have gone to about 620 miles. Well chuffed.

Addition of pepperpots and if I can get teh undertray on the car would improve thisngs again Im sure.

Tiny update, just given it over due wash, rainex windscreen and fitted smoked indicators as originals were rattling around due to broken lugs which fell apart the moment I touched them!

Only jobs left on this are:
Oil chain tensioner
Spray original bonnet
Fit the pepperpots I have waiting

Does indeed, blends nicely in now. I'm not sure about the drawing light action but cheap and indent ever see them so was easy option.
Evening Edd,

I had these on my Ebony Black BBY commuter some years ago, probably around 2017 but cannot remember now. They function great but are a marmite addition, I like them but do prefer a non dynamic smokes repeater now. The car is coming on great by the way, shows perseverance pays off.

Kind regards,

Tom

Third tank in a row averaged 68.8 mpg, so happy with this!!

This is without undertray fitted and not really trying hard for eco.

Was the whole point of it all.

Thabks to @Clackers I have stripped and swapped some NON climate bits to tidy the look of controls.

Usually a2 overbuild, such a lovely component to strip down, easy and simple construction.

Before, note the centre bezel and recirculation button all scratched which let's red light bleed at night.

I then stripped both units and took best bits of all.

Edd that is not climate but the manual heating system, you have no compressor, evaporator or other climate associated parts...

I know, I changed the engine :) it's just what I call it.as it does change the climate in the car

I love it, the simplicity of use matches the car.

I'll edit it to keep people happy though ....hang on....
