Boot Lid Struts

Thanks Steve but I don't want second hand ones, mine are nearly dead. Beet do you know if there is a uk seller that sells these? I want to get the s bit quicker and the postage is pretty high. Thanks you both for your help

Most of the non-OEM dampers do not have the brake at the end and so they really do just crash into the stops. That Febi part is also > double the price of the Stabilus parts.

Thanks, I see the lifetime guarantee and thought it's a bit much for a gas strut! Have you used the febi struts? And bret when you say they crash is it really noticeable? I have just asked halfords and they can't get any.

Thanks for your help

The lifetime guarantee price was for a pair (I believe - just checking with the seller now) the picture shows two and the description states "struts" not "strut" but it is always best to check. The Febi price was just for one.

I can't comment on the rubber end stop, I can't say which ones have it and which ones don't, but I have never experienced any problems with any I have used, but Bretti sounds like he has experience of this and that should not be ignored.

I've just fitted some of the lifetime guarantee ones from the same seller to my A4. The knuckle isn't as tight as the oem ones and they do bounce slightly when fully opened but it sure beats getting smacked in the head by the Tailgate. For £17.99 delivered I can't complain.

Thanks I'll give the life time ones a try then and let you know once I've put them on.
£40 is more than I want to spend

Thanks for your help

Wait until I have had a response from the seller, if you order two you might get 4.

He should reply soon.

Is there any maintenance recommended for tailgate struts?

I've recently noticed that mine don't lift the tailgate so high as they once did: I'm reminded of this each time I headbutt the lock mechanism

No maintenance, you need to replace yours, that is a sign that they have weakened.

So what are the preferred ones to go for now? Since I love buying stuff for my A2, I might change those just for poops and laughs

If you just read back through this thread a few posts ago you will find that there are a couple of links to some strut suppliers. (post #22)

They have arrived already :)

They are nice and powerful. The boot no longer slams when I shut it! When the tale gate is up if you push it upwards it does wobble on the struts a little but I never tried this on the original ones so I can't tell if it's any different. What I have noticed is a bit of a small thud when the boot reaches the open position, it's not that bad but I don't remember the old ones doing it but maybe that's just because they struggled to lift the boot? Is this what you was talking about bret?
Over all I'm happy with them.

Thanks for all your help :)

Which ones did you get? The one from the "brands4cars" seller in Germany linked to above? I need new struts because although I know mine are tired, I have had friends slamming the tail gate like they saw a snake in the boot....
