clutch judders pulling away and reversing

Hi

I noticed my 1.6 fsi sport when I lift the clutch just a tiny bit it judders like hell and when I reverse it judders like hell.

1st gear pulling away judders
Reversing judders

All other gears are fine 2nd to 5th and the car drives lovely.

I've had a fsi before so I know the clutch shouldn't be doing this.

What could be the problem?

Any quick responses to solve this problem?

Thanks

Kish

Hi Kish,

Sorry but it doesn't sound like there is a quick fix for that.

It could e an engine mounting failure (which is probably the cheapest and easiest fault out of the list.

If the engine mounts are ok then it is likely to be a clutch fault.

It could be oil on the clutch, but it may be broken clutch springs on the clutch cover plate?

But as I said, you should keep your fingers crossed that it is an engine mounting problem.

Pop the bonnet of a give the engine a huge tug / push to see if it moves.
It should just feel like you are pushing it against the rubber, but if there is play the that may well be the cause.

Okay brilliant thanks for that steve. What about the flywheel? Could that cause juddering?

What should I be looking for when it comes to engine mounts?

And what should I be looking for if I have to buy a clutch kit?

Cheers

Yes, but the flywheel would have to be badly worn and that is unlikely.

As for the mounts, along with the juddering is there any muffled banging?

Ah no there are no banging noises at all steve. Car runs smooth. Engine is very quiet.

I had similar (but not perhaps identical) symptoms with my FSI.
On mine it turned out to be the main bearing on the gearbox that had failed (it's riveted to the casing apparently and can come loose...a fairly common fault on Golfs).
It took probably a year from first noticing something to it failing, and in hindsight it did gradually get worse over this period, but as I was driving daily I didn't notice.

One symptom I had was a whirring sound when in neutral with the engine running. If I dipped the clutch the noise went away, but with clutch up and neutral selected there was an subtle but noticable whirring noise from the gearbox. Now that I have had the bearing replaced and a new clutch fitted this has gone totally and the car is much nicer to drive and the clutch is also less harsh.

Unfortunately it sounds like you need to get it to someone to check it out properly.

The chances are that there is a clutch problem.

But it if you can live with it and if it is not too bad then it might be ok for a while.

But you would be better off getting someone to check it out for you. It is always difficult to diagnose problems like this one remotely.

Believe I have the same issue, just been living with it so far, got use to a very short bite point. Would love to hear what you find when you get it looked at.
