Dashboard Removal

Good Afternoon,

I have looked a bit more.

This is my hexagonal connector on a 2002 FSI, sorry about the quality.

I am no expert with wiring diagrams but I think I have found it. D is the ignition/starter switch. My picture matches perfectly, the missing red is behind the wires out of view.

You connector layout is different a consequence of different model and year I assume. If you trace your burnt out Yellow + Red tracer in the diagram it ends up at the dash.

I hope that helps.

All well and good but it does not help with why it burnt out (after radio replacement????). I think physically tracing the burnt out wire is extremely difficult, you will end up disassembling the gantry.

All very serious and scary, consider professional help.

No, just yellow with a red tracer. - Andy
So, the wire was from the radio to that hexagonal plug. I’ve removed the dash (what a job πŸ₯²) and put it all back together. All working, stereo now working I have however an airbag warning light. Anyone got any ideas please?

Thank you so much.

Full marks for perseverance, well done.

I can only think that you have an older pre-canbus car and this was how they were wired, radio power direct from ignition switch. I have no wiring diagrams for pre-canbus radios and cannot check.

Guessing that your new radio is more power hungry than predecessors and the original yellow wire was not meaty enough, hope you have replaced it with something thicker.

As to airbag, it sounds like you have turned on the ignition with an airbag(s) not connected. You need VCDS or alternative to clear the airbag warning light.

Andy

Cheers Andy L and for all your help. I have to say half way through I was thinking this was well outside my skill set πŸ˜‚ is it ok to drive with airbag light on? It won’t go off in my face will it 🫠

Yes, replaced with thicker wire so hopefully no further problems

Oh and damaged the sunlight sensor so need to rewire that. Apart from that, radios working and so it seems is everything else πŸ™

You forgot to tie a bit a string round and pull up! A few used on ebay, 8D0907539, but the downside is I think you have to take the dash off again!

I cannot see a hazard in driving with airbag light on, never read of misfortune and it is yellow.

Wonder if adding an in line fuse to your new wire to pre-empt any repeat melting has merit.

I think you can use a dumpy screwdriver to fasten the sensor in without removing dash (hopefully) πŸ˜‚ update - got my mate who works in a garage to reset the airbag vide, all working magic. Think I dodged a bullet there! Thank you to all that replied 😊
