All depends on how large an area you wish to remove the coating from, if the part can be removed from the car and what you plan to do to the surface after the soft touch removal. Many of the plastics are the same colour plastic under neath but others like switches are white plastic as you probably already know.

As for cleaners, warm soapy water, hand gel, IPA or acetone in rising levels of strength and a tooth brush, nail brush or plastic scourer. Always use the minimun chemical especially the more powerful ones. Can get messy quickly so protect yourself and the area you are cleaning in. I try to get the part into either a plastic container or a bin bag and clean outside.

when i renovated a centre console handbrake tray, I tried acetone - the soft touch went a bit gooey and it was making a mess, so tried decent washing up liquid and a green scourer, which worked really well on the tray..

I used a hard ink eraser & it worked well with the hand brake under tray of course warmed it up with heat gun while using the eraser., managed to get all of the soft touch off before primer/paint.

Did you leave the handbrake tray as is without paint after removing soft touch? Look ok?

Hi, no I sprayed it with some Matt black paint from Lidl , worked surprisingly well. Others recommend a specialist paint beginning with V.... , someone with fill in the blank shortly. Cheers
