Engine Cutting Out

Thank you again. But that goes back to what we tried first.

Have never managed to get it to cut out by jiggling any if the wires under the passenger side footwell.

Not got to the earth points inside the Sills as I have no idea how to remove Trim to get there, without breaking it.

I have the same issue. Random and unexplained. I've checked the straps and all are tight. Will start moving electrical components from one car to another to see when it gets fixed slot what it follows but I'm thinking maybe alternator but have no proof just a hunch.

Sorry if I am repeating stuff but did you check the smaller of the black wires that are attached to the positive terminal of the battery?

Clutching at straws obviously but it has to be something simple like that.

Yes. Battery Connections look like they are still brand new out of the factory.

Harpers gut feeling is that the Crankshaft Speed Sensor is breaking down but are reluctant to change it without proof of that.

That is a possibility but that would normally show on a VCDS scan as an error.

With all the posts lately it would seem that the 1.4 petrol is starting to get a little unreliable with age. Seems TDI is the better long-term purchase.

I think every engine has its weak points. However most of these are known with the 1.4s. This issue is perplexing but as I have 2 of these cars 1 perfect and 1 with this issue I have the ability to change parts until I get it sorted and I'll be sure to report on it as it is an unresolved flaw that drives many a good A2 into a premature demise.

I would normally agree without hesitation, but it does look like the government are about to penalise (that sounds painful) Diesel car owners. They have said that the previous governments made a huge mistake years ago when they gave special favours to diesel owners, thinking that they polute less. Now it is finally dawning on them that the particulates are very dodgy stuff and so they will try to find a way to put people off buying diesel cars.

I doubt it will affect us much, but extra fuel taxes and higher road taxes for diesel owners are on the way!!!

(I will still stick to TDIs though, all seven A2s in the family are diesel)

Steve B

My next A2 will likely be a diesel. There really is no viable alternative at present and without that it will be reckless to the economy to penalise diesel owners. If there were more significant tax breaks for electric cars then I'd be all in and deal with the pain of the range fear. The way that many are going is diesel motorway car and electric town car, very extravagant and only for the lucky few town journeys are historically the most polluting so if this were possible for the masses it would help a lot.

BAD NEWS !

Thought it was fixed. Took A2 to Kendal today. No problem. On the way home guess what ? THE ENGINE CUT OUT yet again. Only warning light this time was the Red Oil Can.
As other members say, get it scanned again. A red oil can would indicate low oil pressure or low oil level.

No. No problem with Oil Pressure. It's just another random warning light that comes on when the engine cuts out. If you look back in earlier posts I have said all the different warning lights that have come on at different times when the engine has cut out. VCDS Scans do not find any faults to explain my engine cutting out. That is why Haroers are reluctant to let me spend money to have them change the Crankshaft Speed Sensor ( their hunch ) as they would expect it to be showing up as faulty when Scanned. Steve B did suggest a local Member with VCDS Scanner might offer to help. I don't think there can be any in South Lakes / North Lancs !

Contact Tom, user name Timmus, he is based in Lancaster, he is an expert on wiring looms etc. too.

Please be patient, he,ll get back to you. Tom will probably be engaged in his "day job" plus many requests from members.

Still no change.

Engine Cuts Out on average once per 20 Mile trip to work, or home from work.

I would take it all the way to Tony at A2 Cars Milton Keynes, if I could find the time.

I'll be looking more into my car tomorrow, hopefully get an answer by a process of elimination.

No good then ? Or just not enough time ?

To my amazement today, on my first day back at work, the A2 did not Cut Out driving to work or driving home !

I did have stops where I turned the ignition off on both trips however. Does that make a difference to it ?

Maybe it only likes hot weather ?

So are you saying your fault was Low Fuel Pressure, or are you just saying it is something I could try please ?

It is what I will be trying next as it fits my symptoms exactly. I'll let you know how I fare.
