Flexible DRL's ... progress!

Oh well, a few replies from the A2OC, and I'm grateful for that. In the 50's and 60's, chrome was everywhere! Along the body, grills, bumpers ... (My first car was a Ford "Corsair", and that had a huge amount of stainless-steel trim, sweeping along the sides!) ...... then it went out of favour and you saw hardly any chrome on newer, 80's models. Then, a few years ago, back it comes and, I think, it has put the "sparkle" back! In fact, I have noticed just a few current new models with chrome-edged headlights! (Is the "Mini" one of them?) This styling tape is not permanent and can be removed without any damage. It will stand-up to an auto car-wash, too. It was an experiment and my conclusion is favourable. It is going to stay in place because it looks great! I am also going to edge the rear-light clusters in the same tape, too. I feel that it is necessary to be actually looking at the end product in order to be truly critical of it. That does not mean that I am "pig-headed" and oblivious to the advise and opinion of others .... far from it! So thanks to those that have showed willing to reply!

David,

How about ordering the "eco mode" button from the 1.2Tdi that sits in the gearstick surround and wiring this to the TFL cable somewhere further downstream to enable a switch that would enable the DRL to be turned on even when the light is taken out of the 0 position?

Probably not so simple but it seems that it could work...

Also like this you could survive with the single live feed to the DRL on the headlight end.

Hi John,
Yes, that is a very good idea .... it would have been a nightmare to run a further wire through to the engine bay! I wonder if you have any more details of this "eco-mode" button? What does it say on it? Where exactly is it located? Is it a simple "push-for-on" / "push-for-off" operation? Unfortunately, I can't access my ETKA disc without putting the date right back on my computer!

David,

I will try to dig out the part numbers. The button is identical to the button that controls the traction control.
I would get the data for you but for my laptop having a broken fan.
Hopefully I'll get it running at the weekend.

Wow that looks AMAZING DJ 190 !!

i just went and ordered these:

i just ordered the splitable headlights off ebay too, could you run me through how you set it all up please, as in where you wired it too, a picture would be great =)

by the way, could someone please tell me how to disconnect the main wire harness to the headlight unit? (see attached image below) thanks

The plug has a small, raised lip on the outside surface. You need to insert a thin, electrical screwdriver diagonally from the top of the housing, and about a centimeter down, from where that plug is inserted. (there's an obvious insertion window, there) Now lever the housing gently away from the plug, whilst pulling on the plug. It should come away. A tip, here ..... file off that raised lip, so that it can easily be separated in future! Those DRL's that you have ordered are not identical to mine ..... I'd be interested to know just how bright they are, in daylight ..... Also, especially when looking at the indicator light, they do seem to be more "individual" LED's, and not strip? Anyway, that's a good price! You will have to run a wire from your light-switch to the headlights ... it's all in this thread!

Hi David
This is a fantastic job you have done. I have thought about doing the same for a long time.
My 2 concern are that I need the car every day and I am not sure if my lights are splittable.
How long did it take you for the first one?
Do you know the part number for the splittable light ?
I will probably try next year holidays, maybe around Easter.
Thank you.

Thanks Steve for the link, ill ask my tool maker if he can make that but if not ill try with the screwdriver as Dave suggested. I'm definitely going to file off that raised lip, its almost impossible to disconnect !

Ah yes looking closely at it now you can see individual LEDs in the ones ive ordered, in your one Dave can you not see any individual LED's at all? is yours really like an actual tube light?
If mine turn out to be crap I'll return it and ordered the ones you have linked on Page 1

Ok now for the main bit, Lol Dave your kidding me right? :-O You mean to tell me I have to run it from the actual light switch (rotating knob) to the headlight unit? How do you even get access to all of that (behind the headlight switch) and run a cable long enough, this may be out of my league, i would of thought you would wire it in parallel to the cables inside the headlight inside the flap.

can it be done wiring it in parallel to the cables inside the headlight flap? i wouldn't mind if it means its always on as long as its easier lol

Dave if you could send me a pic of how you wired it to the rotating knob and how you ran it passed the engine i would be super grateful =) , have you also got the amber indicating feature working?

As I have mentioned, all the information that you are asking for is either in this very thread or on the Forum ....... you have to insert a pin at the "DFL" location on the main light-switch and run a wire to the DRL's All the info is just there to be found .... I'm just repeating things ....

David

Hi David, I did a proper search now and found much more information on how to wire it, routing, and also the pin layout (although in that thread it was referred to as TFL) but what I can't work out is how to get to the back of the switch to access those pins, could you just let me know how to get to the back of that please?

Thanks

Removing the switch is simple(ish). Press the knob in and turn to the right (from memory it could also be the left). Then the clips should release and the switch will pull forward.

Hi David, my lights arrived but you was right, there're quite "individual" LED's and not a solid bar of light, i like yours alot more and seem to be completely solid from your pics, but i guess this could be your camera, can you confirm that yours has no individual-ness to it? If yours is completely solid with no breaks of individual LED's then I'll return mine and order the same as yours :)

thanks.
