Gearbox Selector tower bearing replacement & oil change

Sounds scarily like the same problem I had with my 1.4 tdi with a GPK box.

A "double bearing plate fail" according to a so called workshop .... (Trying not to go into a rage about my current situation )

But your symptoms do sound the same.

Personally I'm not recommending the vigorous shaking of selector shaft.

ok so i did what matt said i vigorously shook the selector tower until my car was shaking like a guy suffering from DT's

Hi Cammy,

By 'vigourously', please read firmly but carefully - too much force and you may break some of the plastic shifting mechanism.

Good to hear that you've got some gears back though. :)

Regards,

Matt.

yes, i understand that shaking it vigorously could cause other mishaps, maybe i was just lucky with my touch of elephant approach lol i guess it just depends how hard you wanna shake & pull it :/

i did free up 3rd and 4th but will need to see if 5th will free after an oil change failing that it might need it stripped down and give it a major clean unless something has broken inside :(

cheers

... is it worthwhile getting the new parts as suggested in this thread and get someone to fix it or buy a 2nd hand gearbox and replace mine? or burn it and claim the insurance? lol ...

I'd guess around the 400 mark including labour? I can't say for sure because when I had it done by Vince I was also getting other stuff done.

I'd fit a Bluemotion gearbox, longer 5th ratio, good used price and likely to have covered less miles.

If you're going to swap gearbox, Cammy, then the JDD 'box that Steve mentions is what I would personally fit, too. It seems the best compromise of longer gearing and cost. Plus, it has an updated, stronger design of synchromesh. :)

Is there a recommended list of replacement gearboxes from newer cars for all A2s. Hear a lot about tdi but wondered if the same exists for petrol?
