Information Handbrake - Caution !!!!

whats involved in changing the handbrake cables? ours in rubbish for my partner, i can wrench it on pretty hard but its still not as good as it should be IMO

Came back to the car (FSI) yesterday to find a plank stuck under the front wheel - put there by a shopkeeper after it had rolled into the car in front. I was surprised because the handbrake feels very tight (needs a hefty pull to engage more than two or three notches), it was on the shallowest of inclines and I was unable to move the car at all when it was on the third notch - will leave it in gear as a matter of course in future.

Been quoted to replace both rear handbrake cables I would be looking at a total price of £110.80p Apparently the cables are a special order.

Sound about right anyone

Any views on this price? I need to replace both too, but this seems very expensive for a couple of cables?

If it includes labour then that is reasonable.

If it is just for the parts alone then that sounds like a typoical Audi Dealer price. (i.e. expensive)

You can get them cheaper on eBay and they are likely to be good enough, but if you want Audi genuine parts then it costs!!

Even with Audi cables I still leave the car in gear on any inclines, just to make sure, so the cheaper cables are OK for me (IMHO)

The FSI and TDI 90 seem to be less efficient due to the discs on the back, but they should be ok, operhaps the cables are binding or the mechanism seized?

All,

Has anyone managed to source the centre handbrake cable from anywhere other than Audi? It's quite special in its design so I'd imagine it's a dealer only part, but it's worth checking. :p

Thanks,

Matt.

What do you mean when you say "Central cable" I thought there were just two?

There are 3 for cars with drums; the two at the side, and one that connects the two side ones and goes to the handbrake lever. I'm not sure how many there are for cars with disks. :p

It's quite expensive at Audi, at around £45 if I recall correctly.

Matt.

Edit: My 500th post. ;)

I'm not sure if there will be any difference between the centre cable for disks and drums, although I can't see a reason why there would be. :p

The cable has the part number of 8Z0 711 195 A, although again, I'm not sure if this is for drums, disks or both. :)

Matt.
