Happened twice: 1.6 FSI tempereature rising

Understand, thanks! But, it's possible to replace just the thermostat piece, isn't it?
I read in an older thread that one member pulled the rusty thermostat out and drove with a cold engine shortly, before fitting a new one. Haven't check the assembly on the car yet, can't see it good because of the maze of pipes blocking the view, but looking at the pictures of the assembly, the thermostat poece should be little easier to access.

Man, the thermostat piece is very well hidden under the pipe chaos too, there's little chance I can replace anything there myself. I guess a short trip to Germany when I'm back from holidays...

Does 1.6 FSI has 2 thermostats, one 110 degrees at the block and 87 at the top, or my googling just made me worry more than needed?

In this case Google is not always your friend.

This old thread may explain the dual function of an electronic thermostat which uses a heating element to trick the stat into opening early when engine parameters require this - http://www.a2oc.net/forum/showthrea...at-opens-(-fsi-)&highlight=thermostat+opening

Service time booked 19th, new trip to Germany, this time with my boys

I have only positive experience with Audi Zentrum Lübeck and Audi Zentrum Flensburg. I have done all services on my Audis there, either one is good. Both Zentrums have lot of customers from Scandinavian countries. This time I'll be in Flensburg. If you need contact emails, let me know.

The car was at the service, what they found out was that there was nothing wrong with the cooling-sensors-thermostat! The problem was (and still is) in the DIS!
This happened yesterday, that's a third time:

I turned back to the service and the service leader switched the contact on and off a couple of times - the temp jumped back to 90, which would be impossible if the instuments are ok and engine overheated.
So, a new DIS on the list, or the spare one I have stored home.

Ready to drive back home, I hope nothing wrong will happen...

Sounds like you have progress in your root cause analysis. Maybe it is a bad connection, a corroded connector pin, a faulty soldering joint or something else that is possible to fix.

I guess they would find the reason if there were more time. The journey back home was without any temp jump over 90, but I wouldn't care much if it jumped since it's the instrument problem and not overheating.
On the other hand, if the instruments are not good, how can I be sure that the temp of 90 is the real one :)

I've just experienced the temp rising and no warning.

It turned out to be a radiator fan failure..

They changed the fan and fan sensor and I did a 220 mile journey home with no issues.

Moony

It's the opposite from what I experienced, isn't it?

How did you find out that the engine was overheating without the warning?

The temp gauge in car would rise to 90 normally.. then after a while (at random times) it would slowly creep up..

I saw it do that a few times.. I would stop the car..
I never got a warning light on the cluster..
I pop the hood and check the coolant levels.. all OK.
Cooled the engine for 10 minutes and hey presto it would drive normally.

HILLS has had a major major service all recently.

Full service Inc timing belt and water pump
Temp sensor
Water thermostat
AC sensor g63
New air con rad
Egr replaced
Pre cat lambda

So I knew it wasn't any of those items as they had all been done within the last 2 months.

So.. that left few items to check electrically.

We discounted failed head gasket as no oil or water mixing or reduction.

So it left the fan, sensor and fan ecu as the culprit.

The garage changed the fan for a second hand one from A2Steve and I got them to fit a new sensor from TPS. Steve threw in the fan ecu for no cost and I now have a spare in case the old one dies.

Does that help...

Looks like a similar problem, but why there was no warning?
Mine beep'd and flashed at 110.

And, as the service leader did only a few minutes after I arrived with '120 degrees', a couple of key turns, contact on and off, without engine start, clearly showed that there was no overheating, but something with the instruments.
Cooling down from 120 to 90 in a few minutes is impossible.

They have tested the fan functions and confirmed that everything was fine, but I think there will be more testing if the problem repeats.

D
