Leaking fuel filter housing.

I would be interested in one, when I get the car serviced. Makes sence to fit something that will not get brittle and break in time. Because I guess it is a case of when not if.

Cheers

David

are the housings available only from dealer, also do they come with filter etc?
I am having rear brakes done at independent and mechanic has cracked the housing whilst trying to refit brake pipe.
if they come complete, i may have a plastic bolt which we can use as a pattern
Glen

They'll have to replace it as a whole as mike said, so just ask them for the old one back and carefully remove the drain plug, then we would have a pattern for mikee to use

John

ok i now have the complete housing available
let me know where the plug needs to be sent
regards
Glen

Just a thought - Check with the guys, but if it's not too expensive to post it may help to have the housing as well. This would make it easy to check the fit of the new metal plug.

Cheers Spike

sending the whole thing to mike this week
The mechanic snapped one of the hose connections off (don't ask!) so the drain plug has not been released and is unmarked so will make a good pattern
cheers
Glen

Hi.

I've joined the 'club' of sheared off fuel filter housing plug.

Have you been able to make any progress with making an alumiium one?

Thanks

i'm sorry to say that since getting the sample it has been put on hold due to the work loading has gone through the roof and i just cant see it changing--but i will see if a mate will make them at his company. its not dead yet! cheers mike

Did these ever get made ? If causing to be a problem, I know someone who may be able to help, he has a lathe in his shed & makes up stuff in his spare time, all I would need is the sample

Morning All,

Serviced the A2 yesterday and snapped my fuel filter drain plug also :( Just wondering if anybody had managed to make a plug up yet or found an alternative that will do the job? I'm stuck without a car until Tuesday otherwise :(

Many Thanks

Had this problem a while back, car serviced everything fine, next day it cut out, the plastic thing had snapped.

My garage (Smart Workshop in Congresbury) rigged up a washer and screw setup that would be easy to remove at the next service (coming up at the end of May)

Give Richard a bell and I'm sure he can explain what he did.

Thanks Allan, will have a look I to this tomorrow.

was under car this and got Kennys Vw in town to change out the fuel filter.

quite annoyed really as they have snapped the bolt off and not told me,
they have put a larger bolt in its place but hangs down around 2 inches below the rest of the housing.

In all the instances of bolts being used to jerry-rig a repair, this is only a get you going solution.

The original plastic bolt has a hole through it for pressure relief and you should replace the housing at the earliest opportunity. Unfortunately, even though it's only the plastic screw that needs replacing, you cannot buy it separately - you must buy the whole housing.

This is actually not a bad thing - over the years of heat cycles (hot diesel, freezing winter), the plastic will have become brittle, which probably explains why so many bolts are now snapping. On the other hand, ham-fisted mechanics who can't read will account for more breakages (the flange on the screw is clearly marked up with the torque of 2 Nm).

Cheers,

Mike

PS There was a move some time back to get these screws made up and I think our resident metal turning expert and social co-secretary A2sumo looked into having them produced in aluminium too. Don't know what became of the idea though.

Hi Guys,

Not been here in a very, very long time and the A2 is really starting to rattle and creak now but I still love her dearly.

Anyway, the plastic bolt on my diesel fuel filter snapped today and it is dripping very, very slightly. I will have a go at a mod tomorrow but was wondering if anything ever came of the metal bolts?

Thanks

Neil

Paul / Depronman might be able to put something together. From his posts he appears to have equipment for working metal and plastic. Given the very low torque would a plastic printed screw work maybe?

My A2 as the earlier filter, but if someone as a broken one that they can send me then happy to look into what can be done. I don't think 3D printing will be the answer as small threads and 3D printing don't go in the same sentence, however I have a Boxford metal lathe and fairly well equipped workshop so I'm fairly sure that I will be able to work something out

I can just about manage to superglue things and only stick a couple of my fingers... I think we have rather different skill sets!
