My A2s

Very nice, Andrew.

I see your 2001 A2 has a multifunction steering wheel. I didn't think MFSW was an option until 2002MY. Is it a retrofit?

Cheers,

Tom

Hi Tom,

the MFSW is original equipment. As its a pre-CANBUS car the steering wheel uses the 4B0 907 487E controller. I had to replace the controller when I got the car as other than the steering wheel controls didn't work, it also kept glitching the diagnostics bus so that it wasn't possible to do a scan of the car without getting communication errors with other modules. Below is the part I removed for replacement.

I'm not sure how its wired, but I guess it connects directly to the head unit's "remote control in" pin 11 on the 20pin connector. As the controller is an A6 part I guess the wiring would be similar to the A6 with MFSW and Concert I combination.

regards

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for the info. I had always been under the impression that it wasn't an option until 2002MY when cars were fitted with CAN-equipped head units, but your car is clear evidence that I was wrong.

Yes, I can only assume that there's a direct connection between the MFSW controller and the stereo (pin 11), rather than the controller simply broadcasting messages onto the CAN bus which all modules ignore other than the stereo .

Again, thanks for the education. :)

Tom

PS: Having just checked the parts in my A2 cave, I have an E-revision MFSW controller. If ever you run into issues again, let me know, as it seems I've got a suitable replacement.

Hi,

lots. The idea is to build the ultimate A2 with either A2 components, introducing parts from other Audi cars (e.g. RNS-E) and upgrades where possible.

There will be a project thread in due cause, probably when it gets a bit warmer! I've got most of the bits now with the VORTEX kit being one of the last additions.

regards

Andrew

Hi Andrew

I was just going through some of the old members cars threads. Are there any updates on the FSI? It sounds an interesting project.

Hi Steve,

not much movement on the FSI at the moment although I did temporarily borrow the front wheels while I had the ones on my 1.4 refurbished:

I have spent a bit of time looking into the construction of VAG gearboxes and what's involved in making a (petrol) A2 5 speed into a 6 speed gearbox using existing parts. It looks like it is possible although the shift mechanism is only available as a complete (and expensive) single assembly unit where as the only part needed is the different gate pattern plate. Although the part could be taken out of a scrap 6 speed gearbox that would be quite a waste, I will probably try a complete gearbox replacement as I have identified 1 or 2 possible candidates. More research will be required on this.

I'm trying to complete a couple of precursor projects first. To make more room in the garage and so make it easier to work on the car I want to build a new shed to house the garden related stuff which currently is in the garage. The old shed is gone and 2000Kg of A2 delivered concrete and aggregates have gone down to make the floor. No shed on top yet as I am taking the opportunity to renovate the exterior of the garage (by which the shed will stand) and finding that the bodge jobs done previously and parts which literally have fallen off take a while to put right.

I will try and do a couple of mods to my everyday driver (the black A2) for when I bring it to ADI. As the nights are getting darker I will probably try out my planned Audi OEM HID headlight mod and fit Osram LED Driving Fogs.

regards

Andrew

Thanks for the reply Andrew. The wheels suit the 1.4, perhaps when you upgrade on the FSI they could find a new home there. The 6 speed mod on the FSI sounds intereating. I've always thought my mates FSI could do with longer gearing (as with many VAG cars). See you at ADI.

My new wheels purchased from fellow member leehallum are on:

I've opted for 205/45 tires on the 17" rims. Partly for comfort and also to increase the ride height slightly. My mud flaps now don't scrape on the speed bumps in the office car part any more!
The speedo is also now spot on so I also don't need to work out the actual speed all the time for all those average speed cameras.
Compared to the 16" SE wheels with standard tires, perhaps slightly firmer, but not really much difference in comfort.

I do like those wheels on your car. I always thought that mud flaps weren't compatible with 17's so that certainly is food for thought for my project.....
