New arrival..

The more I look at this blue car, the more issues I find.. Must stop looking 🤣

Well it's been another day of discovering the weird and wonderful workings of Audi A2's..

But the first job was cleaning the front seats, so while the wife was out meeting a friend for coffee, I was squirting upholstery cleaner all over the living room  By the time she was back everything was under control though.. Judging by how little of the cleaning fluid I actually extracted, the seats are very wet! Wee Scout is keeping an eye on them for me.

So next up was sorting the not locking tailgate. I got the trim off with difficulty, as per instructions found on the forum. It's cunningly designed to fly off at high speed when it finally gives up it's grip.
IMG_20240306_112908_HDR.jpg
I also finally located the mystery emergency release cord, which I knew existed but had never found before.. (don't make me read the manual please )
You can see it has a notch to put your key in and prise it out when needed.

It's handy having two cars at the mo, because I just swapped the locks across, and the one from the grey one worked a treat. Problem solved, new lock required. Although I will try and strip this one down, and see if it can't be revived first.
IMG_20240306_124543_HDR.jpg
It seems like a part people are buying direct from Audi, but I wondered if anyone has used one of these?

The solenoid to lock connecting rods seem to be the same on the two cars, although they are bent a bit differently/

Next up, the number plate lights, so another scan of the forum, and I found the video of the German guy doing this job, but in German. After a bit of reading and detailed watching I realised what was going on. 4 very rusty screws later I managed to pop off the lower tailgate exterior trim quite easily. Using the red plastic tool I prised it down from the top and it eased out quite nicely.
IMG_20240306_131658.jpg
With that off, it's quite easy to remove the lights. Although now my boot doesn't lock again doh.

Any tips on where to get good quality new number plate lights from? Will also need the two tiny torx screws ideally in stainless.

Audi actually used to supply a "service kit" for the boot panel removal. When i say kit, it basically consisted of two double sided sticky pads and the two tiny torx screws. I bought this pack 2 years ago so its probably NLA but could be worth a try.

Good Afternoon,

New number tail lights available at Audi Tradition, candidates for Rick's next AT group buy.

Looks like they come with screws but if not you need No6 (3.5mm) 5/8" (16mm) stainless from anywhere eg. eBay, Screwfix etc for pennies.

Thanks for that Andy, but what a nightmare website, they want an EORI number, which I don't have, and at one point wanted 80 euros for delivery.. Not sure that that is going to fly..

Hello,

May I make a suggestion.

Your probably already well on with it.

The the black plastic holders for the number plate lights did they need a repair?

20240306_172352.jpg

If they are fixable make a scribe on the side to indicate the angle of the screw hole. Remove all the old rusty screw and squirt some brake cleaner in there. Once it's dry fill it with Quick Steel, drill your pilot holes and after an hour or so put a screw in there to make a thread. Take it out again though to let it cure. Fixed.

I've got some second hand ok lenses that could be fixed with a bit of bodge work. @Ami uses epoxy and a small washer to remake the cracked mounting hole.
Save yourself £80.

What do you think to the plan?

Looking at the prices of replacements this seems like a much better idea Sir!

I have one lens completely missing though, so if you have any kind of half decent spare, I would be very glad to purchase it from you.

Thanks :)

Sorry I've perhaps been unclear.
The above photo of the lenses (front and rear image).....
I would like to donate them to your project.

They came off the scrap car.

I don't have the black fixing mounts, hopefully you can repair yours?

I used hot melt to do this, the thick glue that hardens fast, However I now have some LED ones.

Good Evening,

You did not pick up on the reference to Rick. Rick is a member who kindly arranges regular group orders for members at no profit to himself and a loss of considerable spare time. Postage is nothing more than standard mail from Germany, not much.

A flavour

Sorry about that Andy, I'm probably being a bit dopey as usual. I want to get this done asap though, and cheaply if possible, so some kind of repair is probably on the cards.

Ready for fitting 😁👍

Fixed the broken lenses with a little ingenuity
@DaveySprocket please go steady when snugging up the screws my repair meets but does not exceed the internationally recognised 'good enough' standard :) 👍

My seats were definitely cleaner after yesterdays efforts, but still nothing like as clean as I hoped for, so I put that down as a trial run and tried again today.

Fairly mucky water coming out, so something is happening.
IMG_20240307_102247_HDR.jpg
Just need to get them dry and out of the front room before the weekend now..

Next job is getting ready to change the dog bone gearbox mount jobby..

So up in the air she goes..
IMG_20240307_114201_HDR.jpg

The undertray was mostly held on with cable ties, and these were not going to shift..
IMG_20240307_115716.jpg
This fell out when the undertray dropped down, oops
IMG_20240307_120349_HDR.jpg
The starter end of the earth cable clearly needs a clean up.

Having a look around, gaiters on both driveshafts are pretty shabby 😣

This is the dog bone hidden a bit in there.

Well that was a wonderfully easy job to do, for a change!

The three fixings on the bracket are 16mm and the rest are 17mm. I just supported the engine with my trolley jack and swapped everything over.
IMG_20240307_134501_HDR.jpg
Unfortunately I don't think it has reduced the vibrations coming through the gear lever though 😣

The old one was definitely knackered though, so not a waste of time.

I got this tool set to have in the car in case of breakdowns, it's been really handy, except I discovered today it has 2 x 15mm sockets and no 16! So I will be having words with Draper.

It's a bit cold to by lying around under cars today, so I am glad to be finished for now. 🥶
