New owner in Gloucestershire with a modified 75 TDI

I am having the same issue, I have 2 cars insured both with full no claim bonus, however tried to insure another one of my A2's with SAGA over 50's insurance, they quoted £650 as I would need to start with zero no claim bonus, absolutely rip off as I can only drive one car at any one time, the other 2 will be in my warehouse, they said you are welcome to go to the ombudsman to complain as no claim bonuses I have are used on the other 2 cars.
Its the way it is in England, most other countries I know, once you insure the car then anyone can drive it etc etc and your age & no claims bonus is not an important factor.
Rip of Britain as they saying goes.

Other insurance companies are available. A few years back I was with a well known company that purports to support the slightly older customer.
The premium for an A3 1,9 sport TDi was about £400.00. The quote for it's replacement was £1750.00. Yes, seventeen hundred and fifty pounds!!!!
That was an A2 1.4 SE petrol.

Same deal, clean record, huge no claim, Endless phone calls and lectures about the "underwriters" have been consulted etc. etc. Then Adrian Flux, who are pretty good, followed by LV who are excellent.

So cross am I with the first mob that whenever I get one of their tour brochures or anything to do with them in a newspaper or magazine, I tear it into little pieces and chuck it in the bin.

Take heart and soldier on.

Best of luck,

Simon

I have 5 cars insured on an Admiral multi-car policy. If you cajole them a little they will "mirror" the no claims bonus from one car onto another car. I think their prices are pretty competitive too. They seem to give you accumulating discounts for every extra car you own. When I came to insure the 5th car (another A2) the addition to my premium, due to the discounts received on the other 4 cars, was £20!

I have zero affiliation with Admiral.

I was with admiral multi car policy, they kept putting the price up so moved to SAGA, I will try that, Thanks for the heads up.

I’ve found Admiral multi car very good in terms of premium for the past 3 years including a drop in premium after one year and virtually no increase last year. That said, their customer service when someone drove into the back of me in January was DREADFUL. I got a favourable outcome and compensation for their ineptitude, but I’m still waiting to get my £300 excess back because Admiral never got round to chasing up the insurance company of the person who drove into me. Madness

Yes I would second that warning. My wife had an accident (was driven into) and she/we categorically informed admiral that we were stationary at the time and bore no fault. While they paid satisfactorily for the damage, it seemed they couldn't be bothered to fight for my excess and reduced our no claims bonus. I got bored of chasing them when one operative candidly admitted that 'if all was quiet on the legal front then they prefer to leave it that way'!!!!
While this is morally wrong and very irritating I don't think I would be able to afford to run the cars I do without their multicar policy and the rates I seem to get. I make my protest by excluding (not buying) their legal protection service as for them it seems to be money for nothing.

In theory of if you had legal protection, you could have used it to claim for ncb deduction for a no fault claim.
I always tick legal protection, for motor and home.

I think that's the point I'm making. In theory I completely agree. Maybe I didn't go through the correct claims procedure or didn't ask the right questions but they certainly did not direct me to any useful service when I tried to chase my excess and NCB, they just fobbed me off. Since it didn't affect me very much I gave up chasing. Having praised Admiral for what I think are their fair and reasonable insurance premiums (compared to others) I am please #Erlingtheyounger reminded me they are not perfect and has assisted in presenting readers with a balanced review.

@TAABVW im totally with you. I’m HIGHLY likely to renew with them in October as I’ve four cars (including 2 x A2’s) insured with them and last year was circa £600 with protected NCD and relatively low excess’s. You just need to be prepared for the fact they’re bloody useless unless you fight them tooth and nail if you’re unfortunate enough to have an accident.

You’ve just reminded me that I needed to chase us my missing excess (£310 £60 compulsory & £250 voluntary) from the January accident. It’s now in the hands of the lawyers they refer to and as a result of my complaint they’re paying for that. I’ve no doubt I’ll get the cash back but by gum it’s been hard work!!!!

I'm also with Admiral on a multicar policy. As has been commented, their premiums are pretty fair, but what annoys me is that although it's one policy, if you want the legal cover add-on, you have to buy it for each car. 3 cars = 3x the cost. I choose not to, and get legal cover with the campervan's completely separate policy, and on my household insurance instead. If they're not even going to recover your NCB when you've bought their legal assistance, I'm now really glad I haven't shelled out for something that amounts to nothing.

Tbf, I didn’t have their legal protection as have multiple versions on various bank accounts etc. But based on my experience, use them for what they are which a cheap means of keeping you legal and nothing more.

I think it's a post code lottery issue so I asked my neighbours etc. One who owns a Mk4 R32 Golf and others who have small 'normal' cars. They use Hastings. So my online quote from Hastings was around £700 if I fit a black box. I haven't got the time to sit on the phone and get roughly the same high quotes. A friend of mine says his insurance went down a lot when he moved out of the same post code area as me. It's inner city with high crime figures I guess.

The whole point of getting a A2 Tdi was for cheap motoring. I now wish I'd kept my T4 Caravelle and had the gearbox fixed ! That 2.5 Tdi van was around £300 a year from Sterling who used to be HIC. With recent poor service from that company I'm done. I have a Mercedes Sprinter camper insured with another company and I'm liking the idea of just running 1 vehicle with 1 set of bills. The A2 is modified and I've already corrected some bodges by revious owners. I've got until the end of September to make my mind up.

If I need a small car in the future I would look at other VW group cars with JJD gearboxes or AMF Tdi engines. Thats waht I like about my A2 :)

Thanks for your advice everyone !

;)

I just tried Audi inurance online and they came back with £542. It's better but still not cheap ! I'll wait to see if they follow up my enquiry.

The car is now advertised in the Market section of this forum.

Perhaps when I move I can afford to insure another A2 ;)
