New Smart Forfour vs A2

I find some of the above comments incomprehensible. To quote "I like the fortwo but have to say the forfour looks cheaply built....'. The new Forfour is simply a LWB version of the new fortwo......!!!! So are you saying all variants of the Smart look cheaply built?

Hi Adrian, I agree with your comments entirely on this, the Smart fortwo and Smart roadster to the uninitiated might look cheaply made with the plastic panels and quirky dash, but that is deliberate. The new ForFour looks like it is exactly following the Smart design principles and the build quality of Smarts is pretty good. So I applaud Smart for doing this. The old forFour was never a true Smart in my view, but this one looks like it is!! 10 out of 10 for me!

As for your comments about my comments on the A2, you seem to have misunderstood somehow?

All I was saying was that I doubt if there is the slot left for an A2 now that we have the A1? Do you not agree that there is no gap that the A2 could fit?
I am not sure that the "if you do your research" was called for. I was chatting about this not stating facts? Why would I need to research to comment that I didn't personally think there is a gap for the A2 any more. I could say that if you do your research you will discover why buyers didn't "flock to the A2" it was the cost of production and therefore the high sales price that held people back, according to Audi !!

I am sure this is just a simple misunderstanding, so I apologise if you my comments incomprehensible? They are just my opinion and as I said I too disagreed with Cammy's "cheaply built" comment, but I respected his view even if I didn't agree with them and would never respond so strongly. Not everyone is as fully informed as you appear to be on the subject. So please can we stick to the subject?

Closer examination of the on-line info published so far reveals that with the rear back rests folded the new Smart ForFour load platform L = 1285 mm, W = 996 mm. All I now need is L with rear seat backrests up and H from load platform to roof inner.

With the rear seat backrests folded flat on my A2 the load platform is virtually identical to that in the new FourFor. Wonder is that iust coincidence or did the Smart design team take that as a design parameter? Whatever the answer, from a practical standard luggage carrying perspective, the two cars seem very similar (if you ignore the A2's space under the false boot floor and the well created if you remove its rear seats).

And as for a new A2 fitting between the A1 and A3, Birchall have you not looked at the older A3's for space comparisons? The A2 was always a tardis inside compared with the older A3's but it didn't exactly lead to buyers flocking to the A2 did it? If you do your research it is Audi have made it very clear they no longer have short or even medium term plans for a replacement A2.

yes,we are all entitled to our opinion but remember i can only base this on photos that have been published via the link. the simple answer is yes to the " all variants of the Smart look cheaply built?" but would this stop me from buying a car? simple answer... NO! why? because we have all bought cars with good & bad points regardless of build quality or brand name!

i shouldve been more specific but didnt want this to turn into heckling match lol

personally i have not come across a small car that has the same build quality as an audi a2. the fact that it still looks as good today as it did when it first came out is an astounding achievement. can you tell me that any fortwo/forfour or any other small car will look as good in 15 years time? i dont think so but correct me in 15 years if it does :)

i would say that the a2 was a box office failure in terms of sales but a cult classic for it being ahead of its time!

Hi Cammy,

I think you have summed up your response very well and I can agree with you on that.
