Oil consumption

I went into an independent automobile accessories shop today to pick up some Castrol Edge. The seemingly knowledgeable attendent informed me that VAG vehicles consume a lot more oil than other makes, especially if on the Longlife schedule.

Is this correct?

My tdi 90 does seem to use a lot more oil than my MB CLK ever did. However, I hope to canvass other forum members for their thoughts and experiences.
 
My 52 reg 1.4tdi has only used 1l of oil in 18 months on the long life service schedule.
My ex wifes 1.4 petrol needs topping up at regular intervals.
 
When booking with Stealth for a remap (they are known to be very knowledgeable on our cars) they assured me that the oil consumption is completely normal, up to about 0.5l/100km (check this figure with your manual, I'm going off memory!)

Saying that, I havn't had mine for long enough to tell what it uses yet!
