P1556 Charge Pressure Control: Negative Deviation

Yes you have found the problem. In your last pictures the second one clearly shows the end cap has split and the black rubber seal is visible. You need a new intercooler as I suspected.
Excellent! Kind of...

Is this a relatively easy job? I'm guessing the bumper and some other bits need to come off?

How many hours labour do you think a garage would bill?

Not the worst job but not the easiest either. You will need the undertray off an the front end as my picture above with the addition of the two silver crash beams also need removal. Once off an hour later and the new intercooler should be fitted and connected and the rebuild started.

Garage time difficult to say and this is by no means a set figure but would suspect 4-5 hours for the lot, more if fasteners damaged etc.

Thanks for that, much appreciated 👍

Are there any particular after market replacements I should avoid?

Not really. the only thing to make sure is that the small spigot is solid and not drilled through. It is not used on the A2 but still needs to be intact to prevent air loss. One other thing you will probably need to get a new MAP sensor to match the port on the new intercooler.

Thanks for this - sorry for the delay, I think I'm gonna be selling the car instead now. Too many issues and it already owes me too much.

OK, after some unexpected expenses this job is back on...

How much is involved in taking the front end off? I'm guessing the bumper is just several bolts at the top and bottom?

Are the crash beams also just bolted?

Is there anything else I should know?

A quick look on ClickMechanic says I could get this done for £150 which seems pretty reasonable, but I'd be happy to do it myself if it's straightforward.

Thanks in advance.

Hi
You've got this job.
Lets be thankful it not a stinking electrical issue!
EDIT, no offense Mac but I find electrical work exhausting.
I found a front bumper thread here.
From @philward

Thanks for that - very useful!

It seems the clickmechanic quote didn't include parts, and for some reason no intercooler for the A2 is listed on euro car parts.

Is this NISSENS one a suitable/good enough replacement?

Ebay link

States it replaces these part numbers:
8Z0.145.804 | 8Z0.145.804 C | 8Z0145805B | 038906051B | 8Z0145805C | 8Z0145805E

Or this NRF one?

Ebay link

Replaces:
8Z0145804, 8Z0145804C, 8Z0145805C, 8Z0145805E

No idea if the spigot mentioned by audifan is correct on these...

Hi,

When you are sure which intercooler to purchase there sould/could be a technical diagram of it with the sales pitch/advert.
The cut out where the MAP sensor fits comes in two sizes. Check that before you commit to buying the MAP sensor.
All the best

I think that information was being relayed earlier in the thread by someone.

:) 👍

Edit.
Just read the post again and was certain someone mentioned this. It could have been in one of the links I read.

Thanks again!

This is the only technical diagram shown for either of those options - this one being the NRF model:

Hello,
I guessed there maynot be much detail.
Don't worry...
As long as you get the A2 specific intercooler ordered you can check the size you require when it arrives.
The MAF MAP can be fitted at any point in the rebuild.

Thanks.

Parts ordered, so let's give this a crack 👍

Won't be able to do anything until Saturday, mainly dreading getting the bumper off tbh... Will update at the weekend.

Welp, this was a horrible job!

Bumper removal was straight forward if a bit fiddly, but the removal and replacement of the intercooler is very tricky.

As a bare minimum you have to release the left side of the radiator because the intercooler is essentially clipped to it, and you need some movement in order to detach it from the radiator.

If you can work out how to release even more of the slam panel and fan it will make life far easier.

Here you can see the old intercooler well and truly blown - seal popping out and oil everywhere. You'll need to remove this plastic cover via 4 Philips head screws.

New intercooler in after well over an hour of manoeuvring, levering, bending, swearing in attempts to get the damn thing bolted back in place! There's two screws on the back that attach it to the radiator, the lower one is very difficult to work with as there's no space for any tools let alone a hand...

I'd also personally advise not to even attempt to remove the MAP sensor because the screws are ridiculously soft. We tried around 6 different screwdrivers/bits and nothing fit well enough for these things not to give way.

I've got some spare new OEM screws for anyone replacing their MAP sensor.

This is how I blocked off the port on the back (hopefully it'll hold):
