For anyone looking at looking for a means to have instrument cluster lights on permanently.
If you have a more modern cluster (I don't know how you find that out sorry), you can code this using VCDS.
For those who have an older cluster, or no access to VCDS, if you wire up your sidelights (or main beam) to be used as DRL, as shown in the useful YT by @mtl
this will make those cluster lights come on.
I expected the DRL solution to just turn on the front sidelights, however it acts as if you turn on the sidelights with the main switch, so the rear sidelights and all dash lights come on. I'm happy with this, but if you don't want the full dash lit up, you may want to look for another solution.
Alas I upgraded my cluster to get this, before realising the DRL solution would give me what I was looking for, thus this little heads-up.....
Some LED bulbs (W3W) in the sidelights make it look great from the front with them as DRLs
